At 43.5 Meters Tall, Christ the Protector Surpasses the Famous Christ the Redeemer by 5.5 Meters, Being Built Solely with Community Donations. The Monument Includes a Tourist Complex with a Glass Chapel, the Fountain of the Apostles, and a Path Dedicated to Pilgrimage.
The Gaucho city of Encantado, located in the Taquari Valley, is preparing to inaugurate, on April 6, 2025, the largest statue of Christ in Brazil, named Christ the Protector. The monument, with an impressive height of 43.5 meters, exceeds the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro by 5.5 meters, officially becoming the largest in the country. The ceremony will include representatives of the Catholic Church and local authorities, as reported by the newspaper Estadão on March 22, 2025.
Built entirely with funding from local community donations, Christ the Protector took about two years to complete. The statue’s structure is made of reinforced concrete and steel, weighing approximately 1,712 tons, standing out for its design and grandeur.
Tourist Complex and Religious Attractions
In addition to the main statue, the tourist complex of Christ the Protector will offer additional attractions for visitors and pilgrims. One of the main attractions will be a chapel made entirely of glass, providing a panoramic view of the region, and the so-called “Fountain of the 12 Apostles,” a symbolic space representing each disciple of Jesus Christ. Another attraction will be the “Path of the Psalms,” an area intended for pilgrimages and moments of reflection, as highlighted by the newspaper Folha de São Paulo in its recent coverage of the project.

These attractions aim to establish Encantado as a national tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in experiences of faith and connection with nature, generating a positive economic impact for the municipality and region.
Community Funding and Popular Mobilization for Christ the Protector
One of the distinguishing features of the Christ the Protector project is that it was completely funded by the community through fundraising efforts carried out by the Association of Friends of Christ of Encantado (AACE). There was no application of public funds in the construction, emphasizing the collaborative and community nature of the initiative, according to information from the UOL Notícias portal.
For two years, residents and supporters of the project conducted ongoing campaigns to raise sufficient funds for the completion of the monument, demonstrating a strong sense of belonging and local pride.
Special Ceremony and Papal Blessing
The inauguration of the statue will feature a special ceremony that will be attended by Cardinal Silvano Maria Tomasi, the Pope’s special envoy, to officially bless Christ the Protector. The papal representative has already performed a special blessing in Rome over a fragment of the statue’s right hand, which will be displayed on inauguration day, as detailed by the newspaper Correio Braziliense.
This recognition by the Vatican reinforces the religious and cultural symbolism of the monument, highlighting the importance of Christ the Protector for the Catholic community and strengthening the spiritual character of the location.
