A Polish farmer saw his harvest disappear in a matter of hours after a false post on social media claimed he was distributing 150 tons of potatoes for free.

The incident occurred in Dąbrowica, in the Podkarpacie region of Poland, and left the farmer deeply surprised upon returning to the field and realizing that almost all of the produce had vanished.

The rumor claimed that the farmer was unable to sell the harvest and had decided to allow anyone to enter the property and take the potatoes without paying.

The false information spread quickly over the weekend, prompting residents and even farmers from nearby villages to fill bags, vehicles, and trailers. Some ended up taking dozens of tons.

When the farmer, identified as Piotr, returned to the site last Monday, he found practically an empty field. He stated that he does not live in Dąbrowica and had been attending a family party over the weekend, without imagining that the viral post would attract so many people to his farm.

Surprised and Concerned Reaction

“I was shocked. I am 68 years old and have never experienced anything like this,” Piotr told the Nowiny24 portal. He described the situation as a nightmare and said he hopes that the people who were on-site will contact him to clarify what happened and try to resolve the situation amicably. If that does not happen, he admits that the case may be taken to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Piotr reported that a man already approached him to apologize after taking two bags of potatoes upon seeing the intense movement. The farmer said he accepted the apology but emphasized that there were people who took much larger quantities, including six trailers, roughly around 60 tons.

In the video released by Nowiny24, a person films Piotr’s area and says: “A farmer dumped 150 tons of potatoes he couldn’t sell. He dumped them and said anyone could take them. For free!” This narrative further fueled the circulation of the story, despite having no basis.

So far, no one knows who initially created or shared the false information. The farmer reported that he has already received about 70 calls since then, including 15 from journalists interested in the case. He has cultivated his land in the region for 25 years and has not yet filed a police report, hoping that those responsible will return the potatoes.
