The consumer's pocket, taxi drivers and the app have to deal with the constant readjustments in fuel prices practiced by Petrobras, but after all, how can one explain why ethanol, gasoline and diesel prices plummeted at the beginning of the pandemic, if the dollar was it extremely loud?

In February 2020, the beginning of the global crisis caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, fuel prices in general plummeted all over the world, but “not everything is rosy” and after May, we started to grow again.

Quarantine influenced the drop in gasoline, diesel and ethanol prices

Social isolation measures led to a drastic decrease in fuel consumption, both for transport and for industry.

Law of supply and demand: the drastic reduction in demand caused fuel prices to plummet, causing excess stock of the product.

As reported at the time, by us at Click Petróleo e Gas, oil was even traded at negative values, as without having a place to store it, many investors preferred to pay in order not to receive the purchased barrels.

That is, with gasoline and diesel much cheaper, alcohol had to drop in price as well. At the time, the technical director of Unica – União da Indústria de Cana-de-açúcar, informed that the sector had accumulated losses, even selling the biofuel below cost price.

But it didn't take long for the global market to adapt to the new situation and prices started to rise again. With gasoline and ethanol demand on the rise, prices consequently rose, and losses at the pump were fixed.

Not only Brazil, but the whole world suffers from the constant rise in fuel prices, which are currently being sold again with positive margins, both ethanol, gasoline and diesel.

Lessons learned? What can we learn from all that happened at the beginning of the pandemic? – If fuel prices have risen again, it is because there are people willing to pay that amount. Since, not least, the consumer is a protagonist and regulator of the market.

After to be approved on August 11th for the direct sale of ethanol and the end of loyalty to the brand at gas stations, that is, which allows gas stations that display brands from a specific distributor to start selling fuels from other suppliers, as long as the consumer is informed, the time has come for the much-promised sale of gasoline and ethanol via delivery to be released by the National Biofuel Agency, the ANP. Taken together, measures can become the 'solution' to contain and curb the rise in gasoline prices, and relieve consumers' pockets.

With this, the stations will be able to deliver regular gasoline or ethanol at home. The measure, however, enters into force 180 days after the publication of the resolution in the Official Gazette.

According to ANP, the measures approved, have been discussed since the beginning of the 2018 truck drivers' strike and would have the objective of guaranteeing supply and increasing market efficiency.

According to the norm, the delivery of fuels can only be made for the delivery of ethanol and 'type C' gasoline (the common one sold at gas stations). The supply must take place in the same municipality in which the dealer is authorized to operate.
