German Driver Discovers Wood Blocks In Place Of The Brake Pads Of A Newly Purchased Mercedes GLE, Leading To An Investigation Into Safety Item Tampering
Imagine buying a luxury SUV and realizing, on the first brake, that something is very wrong with the brake pads system.
This is what happened to a German driver who acquired a Mercedes GLE at an auction and, shortly after taking the wheel, noticed that the vehicle barely reduced speed, even with full application of the pedal.
Improvised Brake Pads Reveal Fraud
The driver, whose name has not been disclosed by the German press, reported to the Ludwigsburg police that the failure became evident on the first attempt to brake. Given the risk, he called a tow truck and took the SUV straight to a shop for a complete inspection.

The mechanics discovered that, instead of authorized parts, the sports utility vehicle was equipped with wood blocks with the Brembo logo hand-written in permanent marker. The material offered virtually no braking power and had already caused damage to the vehicle’s discs.
The technical assessment indicated that the wood wears down almost instantly when rubbed against metal. According to Hans Bauer, an expert in safety who assisted in the investigation, the case represented not only amateurism but a level of negligence that he classified as criminal.
For him, the improvised material would never have been able to stop a two-ton vehicle in real traffic situations.
Investigation Into Tampering
The German police opened a criminal case against the former owner, accused of tampering with essential automotive safety components.
The motivation for the irregular substitution of the parts remains undefined, and there is no information about the exact moment when the tampering occurred.
The case gained national attention for exposing an extreme risk to the buyer and also to other drivers. Authorities emphasized that any manipulation of this kind immediately compromises vehicle control and puts lives at risk, especially when it involves critical elements such as brake pads.
