The Publication Made on December 17 by NASA’s Profile on Social Media, When Celebrating the 1903 Flight of the Wright Brothers, Triggered a Mass Reaction from Brazilians Who Filled the Comments to Assert That the Pioneer of Aviation Was Santos Dumont, Reigniting a Global Historical Dispute.

On December 17, NASA’s profile on X celebrated the 1903 flight of the Wright Brothers, but the post generated thousands of comments from Brazilians arguing that the pioneer of flight was Santos Dumont, reigniting a global historical debate.

The publication marked the anniversary of the first sustained and controlled flight of a heavier-than-air machine, which took place on December 17, 1903, according to the historical narrative adopted by scientific and aerospace institutions in the United States.

In the text, the space agency congratulated both old and new pioneers who have taken humanity to new heights in air and space, connecting the achievement of the early 20th century to the technological advances of space exploration.

The message, of an institutional tone, was published exactly on the symbolic date of the historical event and quickly gained widespread international attention, driven by the global reach of NASA’s official profile.

Brazilian Reaction Dominates Comments on the Publication

Within hours of the post, the comments began to be mostly occupied by Brazilian users, who questioned the claim and pointed to Santos Dumont as the true responsible for the first successful flight of an airplane.

The messages echoed that the flight of the 14-Bis, carried out in 1906, took place in front of an audience, with its own takeoff and without external assistance, a recurring argument in Brazilian defense.

Many comments highlighted that historical recognition would depend on technical criteria and public records, reinforcing a narrative consolidated in education and scientific culture in Brazil.

Historical Debate Resurfaces on Social Media

The divergence between the versions is not new and periodically emerges on symbolic dates related to the history of global aviation, especially when international institutions reinforce the North American version.

On social media, the episode again exposed cultural, educational, and historiographical differences regarding the concept of controlled, sustained, and documented flight, with no consensus among countries.

So far, NASA has not officially responded to the comments, maintaining the original publication, while the debate continued actively for hours, with thousands of interactions, likes, and cross responses.

The episode reinforces how historical dates and digital platforms amplify old narrative disputes, transforming technical commemorations into global discussions that are heated and, at times, filled with collective emotion.
