NASA Anticipates Return of Crew 11 After Identifying Severe, Though Stable, Health Condition in Astronaut on the ISS, Cancels Scheduled Spacewalk and Considers Ending Mission Before February 2026, Prioritizing Treatment on Earth and Maintaining Station Operations with Reduced Crew for the Next Few Days with No Pause

The NASA has issued a maximum alert and decided to expedite the return of the Crew 11 mission after identifying a health condition considered serious in an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.

The incident resulted in the immediate cancellation of a spacewalk scheduled for this week.

The decision was treated as preventive.

The affected astronaut was described as stable.

Nonetheless, the agency evaluated that the condition requires proper care and investigation on Earth.

NASA did not disclose the identity of the crew member or details of the issue, citing medical privacy.

The agency emphasized that the safety and health of the crew is the absolute priority.

Maximum Alert and the First Medical Evacuation in More Than 25 Years

NASA classified the incident as the first medical evacuation of the International Space Station era.

The milestone comes after nearly 25 years of continuous human occupation in the orbital laboratory.

The change in scenario altered mission planning within hours.

And forced an immediate reorganization of tasks, schedule, and priorities.

The operational message was direct.

When adequate treatment cannot be guaranteed in orbit, return becomes the lowest-risk option.

Who is in Crew 11 and How NASA Handled Medical Privacy

The Crew 11 consists of American astronauts Zena Cardman and Michael Fincke.

The group also includes Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui from JAXA.

And Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov.

NASA reported that the affected crew member remains stable.

But kept confidentiality about which member presented the serious condition.

The agency also did not detail symptoms, diagnosis, or clinical protocols in orbit, citing medical privacy.

Spacewalk Canceled and Mission May End Earlier Than Expected

NASA canceled the extravehicular activity following the emergence of the medical issue.

The mission had been launched on August 1, 2025 in a Crew Dragon capsule from SpaceX.

The return is now being treated as expedited compared to the original schedule.

The internal assessment considered that a significant portion of the objectives was already advanced.

Still, an early return tends to push experiments and maintenance tasks to the next crew.

ISS Will Continue with Reduced Crew and Focus on Basic Maintenance

With the departure of Crew 11, the International Space Station is likely to operate for a period with a reduced crew.

The guidance is to concentrate efforts on essential maintenance and operational continuity.

The described perspective is to preserve critical systems and indispensable routines.

And to hold less urgent activities until the arrival of the next crew.

In your opinion, should NASA disclose more medical details in emergencies in space, or should astronaut privacy prevail even in an unprecedented case like this?

Simples.
