If you think that renewing your National Driving License (CNH) is just a formality, get ready for a big change. A new proposal is about to become law and promises to profoundly impact the lives of millions of Brazilian drivers.

Approved by Road and Transport Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, the measure requires that all drivers, without exception, undergo a psychological assessment during the renewal of their driver's license.

The proposal, authored by senator Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), has already been approved in the Senate and is now advancing to other committees in the Chamber of Deputies before proceeding to presidential sanction.

The measure seeks change the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), introducing a mandatory psychological assessment for all drivers when renewing their licenses.

Currently, this assessment is only carried out for candidates for their first license and professional drivers. If the law is enacted, all drivers will need to undergo this periodic psychological analysis, something that promises to bring greater safety to traffic.

The importance of mental health while driving

According to Senator Davi Alcolumbre, a driver's psychological conditions can vary over the years, justifying the need for regular reassessments.

“The psychological state of a candidate during the first license may not be the same upon renewal. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that everyone is in the right mental condition to drive a vehicle safely.“, stated the senator.

Representative Hugo Leal (PSD-RJ), project rapporteur, also highlighted the importance of this measure. According to him, many traffic accidents in Brazil are caused by recklessness, negligence or malpractice, often associated with adverse psychological conditions.

“This initiative is essential to identify problems that could compromise the ability to drive safely,” said Leal.

Impact on road safety

The implementation of this measure could have a significant impact on the safety of Brazilian roads. Psychological assessment will be a crucial tool to detect emotional or behavioral disorders that could negatively influence driving, thus reducing the risk of accidents.

Furthermore, this approach can contribute to a more harmonious coexistence on the roads, by identifying drivers who may pose a risk to themselves and others.

The future of Brazilian roads

With the possibility that this change will take effect soon, The future of Brazilian roads can be transformed. Mandatory regular psychological assessments can represent a milestone in accident prevention. However, it remains to be seen how this new rule will be implemented in practice and what its true impacts will be.

What do you think about mandatory psychological evaluations when renewing a driver’s license? Do you think this new requirement could affect traffic safety? Comment and join the discussion!

I think this law is just another one of the dozens of laws and fines created every year just to take money (which is already a pittance) from the pockets of Brazilian drivers. Psychometric tests will not take away or add anything to a driver's ability to make a mess in traffic or not. Being a good driver is the same as being a good citizen...you either are or you are not...!!!! They should bring back subjects like EMC to schools...that would bring more results!!

I think this gentleman is the one who needs several psychological exams, in fact he shouldn't even be in this deputy's seat, he is there to harm the Brazilian people.

Just another way to take money from Brazilians, these senators and deputies only serve to increase taxes and fees for citizens.

This has nothing to do with traffic, this is just another way to harm the citizen's mouth, how many PM and federal civilians undergo psychometric tests to enforce the law and how many are exercising this profession and committing barbarities, killing and taking their own lives, could this be psychological? I don't think so, this is a lack of God in the heart for any function in life.
