Oil has returned to the center of the war between Russia and Ukraine. In a high-impact symbolic and strategic offensive, Ukrainian forces attacked a large oil refinery located in the Russian city of Syzran, considered a primary fuel processing facility.
The attack occurred using British missiles and, according to local sources, the refinery was hit more than once. Images released on social media showed intense flashes and explosions in the industrial area, highlighting the scale of the assault.
The facility had already been targeted in previous drone attacks in early December, indicating an intensification of Ukrainian pressure on Russian energy infrastructure.

Partial Blackout Amplifies Impact of the Attack on Oil
In addition to the refinery, a drone reportedly hit a nearby substation. The impact caused a partial blackout in the Samara region, extending the effects of the attack beyond the oil sector.
Russian air defenses were activated during the offensive. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that 12 Ukrainian drones were shot down in the region, although it did not detail the full extent of the damage.
The episode reinforces the Ukrainian strategy of targeting energy infrastructure linked to oil and electricity supply, in direct response to Russian actions against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
Russian Bombings Hit Ukrainian Cities During the Early Morning
While the attack on the oil refinery occurred in Russian territory, Ukraine faced new bombings. Less than 24 hours after a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv that left dozens injured, new offensives were recorded overnight.
In the Kherson region, rescue teams reported that a woman was injured in a bombing described as massive. Fires spread and became part of the urban landscape.
In Odessa, local authorities stated that residences were hit by drones, increasing the number of affected civilian areas.
Energy War Gains Strategic Weight
The attacks occur at a sensitive moment in the conflict. Moscow is trying to paralyze Ukraine’s energy and heating systems, especially with the approaching periods of colder temperatures.
In this context, oil and electricity have become central assets of the war. Refineries, substations, and distribution systems have become recurring targets, both to pressure the economy and to undermine the adversary’s logistical capacity.
Territorial Advances and Narrative Disputes
Alongside the attacks, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited command posts in the occupied territories of Ukraine. During the visit, Russian commanders claimed to have taken control of cities in the Donetsk and Zaporijia regions.
However, these statements were quickly rejected by Kyiv. The Ukrainian government accused Moscow of misinformation and emphasized that, although the situation remains difficult, military operations continue actively.
The confrontation, increasingly marked by attacks on oil and energy infrastructure, highlights an escalation that extends beyond the traditional battlefield and raises risks for regional energy security.
