In 2012, the billionaire bought 98% of Lanai Island (or Lānaʻi). The deal cost about US$ 300 million. Ellison’s passion for Hawaii began in childhood.

Ellison decided to invest in modernizing the island. He renovated two hotels from the luxury chain Four Seasons. The first is the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, located by the sea. The second is the Sensei Lanai, situated in the mountainous region. The latter focuses on wellness, health, and longevity.
The Creation of the Sensei Brand: Health and Longevity
The Sensei Lanai resort was a partnership with David Agus. Agus is a physician specializing in oncology and preventive medicine who treated Steve Jobs, Ellison’s late friend. The Sensei brand was created in 2018.
The idea behind the venture is to offer personalized wellness, longevity, and preventive health programs. These programs are based on science, nutrition, fitness, and mindfulness. The hotel in Lanai was the brand’s first, which has since expanded to other locations, such as California.
A Sustainable “Laboratory” with Illustrious Visitors
Ellison has described the island of Lanai as a “laboratory for a sustainable future”. There, he could test new technologies in energy, agriculture, and wellness.
According to Bloomberg, Ellison has already received illustrious visitors on “his island”. Among them are Elon Musk, the billionaire who just lost the title of richest man in the world. Actor Tom Cruise and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have also visited the site.
Local Criticism: Elitization and Impact on the Community
Despite the investments in the island, there are criticisms from the residents. They claim that the area has become more elitized. They also say that the changes benefit the luxury tourism much more than the local community. There are reports that the transformations are driving out families who have lived there for generations.
