When the Varig Crisis Dragged the Hotel Down
The same Varig that boosted the most luxurious hotel in the Amazon ended up dragging the group down when it went into crisis. Labor liens, compromised revenues, and decreasing revenue began to erode the giant of the jungle.
Part of the revenue began to be garnished to pay old debts, which reduced the hotel’s ability to invest and even to maintain services. From there, the Tropical entered a spiral that would lead to its current blackout.
Without cash, with growing debts, and with a structure too large for the current tourism moment in the region, the hotel began to lose ground. Luxury without maintenance becomes a burden. And that’s what happened.
Mass Layoffs and Labor Debts
Since 2011, the hotel administration has not deposited FGTS or INSS for new employees. This opened a labor wound that has not closed.
The 1,200-employee workforce was reduced to less than 100 at the beginning of this year. There were wave after wave of layoffs, but without the payment of severance pays.
The labor debt alone may reach 20 million reais.
This dismantling also affected the local economy. With the closure of the Tropical, the number of lost jobs in Manaus’ hospitality increased by one third.
A tourist facility of that size, when it stops, does not only affect the owner; it impacts suppliers, former employees, and the whole chain that lived off events and accommodations.
The City That Fit Inside the Hotel
The most luxurious hotel in the Amazon was not just a beautiful building. It spanned over 200,000 square meters. Guests found a shopping mall with famous brands, tennis courts, a sports gym, a water park with wave pools, bars, barbecue restaurants, and even an internal zoo with Amazonian animals. At its peak, there were more than 200 animals, some endangered, kept within the hotel premises.
With six months without power, the long hallways turned into dark tunnels. What were once brightly lit ballrooms for New Year’s Eve, concerts, and balls became a ghostly scene.
The hotel began to create its own legends because it was empty, silent, and enormous.
The Luxury of Authorities Remained Frozen in Time
One of the jewels of the most luxurious hotel in the Amazon was the presidential suite, with over 300 square meters, an office, a game room, a bar, dry and wet saunas, and a terrace with a private pool. It was here that presidents, foreign officials, and royalty stayed with comfort and discretion. All of this is now closed as if someone had paused time.
Former employees who spent 20 or 30 years there express sadness at seeing the building standing still and empty. Many of them did not receive their severance.
Many are now over 50 or 60 years old and will hardly find an equivalent position. The hotel that enchanted guests from around the world could not protect those who made it function.
Why Did the Hotel Stop for Good?
The sequence that led to the closure of the most luxurious hotel in the Amazon is clear. First, the crisis of the group linked to Varig pulled revenue to pay debts.
Then, labor garnishments compromised revenue. Next came the defaults on FGTS and INSS.
With fewer employees, fewer services, and more debts, the hotel lost competitiveness. When the power was cut off in May due to overdue bills totaling more than 20 million reais, the hotel simply could not operate anymore.
Without power, there is no way to receive guests, maintain pools, air conditioning, security, kitchen, and events. The blackout was the final blow in a crisis that had already lasted years.
Is There Still a Chance to Reopen?
The administrator of the bankrupt estate stated that the hotel can reopen if an investor comes forward willing to pay the estimated 200 million reais for the venture.
The idea would be to recover the building and redirect it to tourism, as the location is still strategic.
But a facility of this magnitude requires significant capital and professional, modern, and transparent management to avoid repeating the past. It is possible to rebuild the icon, but it is neither cheap nor quick.
What the Story of the Tropical Teaches
The case of the most luxurious hotel in the Amazon shows that size, fame, and a list of celebrities do not shield a business from poor management and debt.
It also shows that high-end tourism in the region needs to be linked to a solid financial structure.
The Tropical Hotel in Manaus was for four decades the elegant face of the jungle for kings, presidents, and artists, but ended up defeated by debts, an outdated model, and a bankruptcy process that ignored those who worked there.
How Is the Hotel Today in 2025?
In 2025, the most luxurious hotel in the Amazon is in another phase. The old Tropical Hotel in Manaus was purchased by the Fametro Group on November 11, 2020 and is undergoing extensive revitalization, with an estimated investment of 250 million reais and generating over 700 direct jobs since the start of construction in 2021.
The plan is to reopen the complex in July 2025 under the Tribute Portfolio Hotel brand of Marriott International, preserving the historical characteristics of the building while delivering a modern product, with 580 rooms of various categories, five restaurants, a convention center, two wave pools, a dock to welcome vessels, and even an animal shelter in place of the former zoo.
The expectation shared by the hotel itself is for a partial reopening in 2024, with leisure areas operational, and full operation in 2025, which could place Manaus back on the map of high-end tourism.

Morei em Manaus por 22 anos. Era na época um ponto turístico e passa tempo. Tinha até máquinas de jogos eletrônicos. Mesmo que uma pessoa estivesse em outro hotel, mesmo assim esse turista terminava por visitar o Tropical Hotel. Inclusive passei um Natal neste Hotel. Era cobrado em dólares. Para nós não Era estranho, até porque tudo em Manaus era em dólar por ser Zona Franca. Inclusive me hospedei no Tropical de Boa Vista RR e Tropical de Santarém no Pará, era todos da Varig. Tempos bom e muita saudade da Varig. Jantei muitas vezes no hotel. Tudo que era da Varig era bonito. Vou torcer pra se erguer novamente. Há sociedade Manuara sempre visitava o Tropical.
