If You Think Helicopters Are Just Transport Machines, It’s Time to Meet the Eurocopter Tiger, the Most Feared Attack Helicopter Ever Manufactured in Europe.

Developed by Airbus Helicopters, the Tiger is a multirole combat helicopter with a twin-engine, a result of cooperation between Germany, France, and Spain. This article will show you why this agile and maneuverable machine is considered one of the most advanced in the world.

The Eurocopter Tiger, based on the Tiger UHT prototype, was designed to be highly controllable and capable of performing high-speed turns and evasive maneuvers.

Before being deployed on missions, military forces must consider the distance and accessibility of the site, as in cases of long-distance transport, the helicopter is disassembled into its main components to facilitate packing and loading.

According to information from the Fluctus channel on YouTube, upon arrival at the mission area, these components are unloaded and assembled by specialized technicians and engineers.

Assembly and Preparation for Combat

The assembly of the Eurocopter Tiger begins with the rotor blades, which are carefully aligned, balanced, and secured to the rotor hub.

Elements such as wheels, actuators, and control mechanisms are attached to the helicopter, allowing the landing gear to function smoothly. Finally, specialized instruments, such as ground mapping systems and the Osiris system, are integrated into the aircraft.

The maintenance team goes through a detailed checklist before each flight to ensure that all systems and components of the helicopter are functioning correctly.

This includes external inspection, evaluation of the rotor system, hydraulic system, avionics, and weapon system. These checks are crucial to ensure that the helicopter is ready for any situation.

Eurocopter Tiger Armament

The process of loading weapons is meticulous. The loading team has access to the helicopter’s attachment points and the tools necessary for the installation of the weapons.

Depending on the mission, the appropriate weapons are selected and installed, ensuring that the Tiger is properly armed and ready for combat operations.

Combat Performance

During exercises, the capabilities of the Tiger helicopter are fully demonstrated. Quick and stable takeoffs result from the Tiger’s highly powerful twin engines, allowing pilots to accelerate rapidly and control the aircraft with precision.

The low-inertia rotor system also enables complete loops and negative G maneuvers, giving the Tiger the advantage of operating in confined spaces and rugged terrain.

With an engine system that allows for rapid altitude gain and a speed of up to 178 km/h, the Tiger is a force to be reckoned with.

Weaponry Versatility

The Eurocopter Tiger can be equipped with a variety of armaments, making it a formidable weapon platform. Short-range air-to-air missiles Mistral are used to engage enemy helicopters and light aircraft, thanks to heat-seeking technology. This flexibility allows the Tiger to adapt to various missions, including air combat, close air support, reconnaissance, and anti-tank warfare.

Other Notable Helicopters

Another notable project is the light attack helicopter AW19, developed by the Italian company Leonardo. Designed in response to the Future Lynx program by the UK Ministry of Defence and driven by the need for the Italian Army to renew its military arsenal, the AW19 uses a Fenestron shrouded tail rotor, which reduces noise and signature, making it stealthier in combat operations.

The AW149, a medium-weight helicopter, is designed for a wide range of military and civilian applications. Leonardo has been developing and testing the light multirole missile (LMM) for over a decade. This missile is capable of engaging various targets, including land and sea vessels, armored vehicles, and various aircraft. It can be launched from various platforms, such as helicopters, ships, and ground vehicles.

The T129 ATK is another multirole attack helicopter, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries in cooperation with Augusta Westland and Leonardo. Based on the A129 Mangusta, the T129 has been extensively modified to meet the specific requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces, adding more powerful engines, advanced avionics, and optics. This helicopter can carry a significant payload of weapons, including a 20 mm cannon, anti-tank missiles, and air-to-air missiles.

Importance of Attack Helicopters

Military technology is constantly advancing, and attack helicopters continue to be a critical tool for military forces worldwide. The ability to engage in diverse scenarios with various weapon systems, combined with good maneuverability in challenging environments, makes these helicopters ideal for close air support missions, reconnaissance, anti-tank warfare, and air defense.
