Nestled at over 2,000 meters above sea level, the Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena, in the Swiss village of Gspon, is the most isolated stadium in the world, accessible only by cable car and surrounded by stunning alpine scenery
Located in the small village of Gspon, in the Valais canton of Switzerland, the Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena is recognized as the most isolated football stadium in the world. The arena also holds another notable title: it is the highest pitch in Europe, situated at 2,012 meters above sea level.
It belongs to the amateur club FC Gspon, founded in 1974, and is named after the legendary Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who financed the installation of the synthetic pitch in 2009.
A Field on Top of the Mountains
The village of Gspon is located about 800 meters above the municipality of Staldenried and has no road access.

The only way to reach the site is via a cable car. This extreme isolation is also reflected in the community life, which consists of only five permanent residents.
The old cable car, which held 12 people, was replaced in 2019 by a modern version with a capacity for 25 passengers, ensuring the transportation of players and visitors.
Small, Unusual, and with a Spectacular View
The field is smaller than official dimensions, and therefore, matches take place with eight players on each team, without the offside rule.
Netting surrounds the pitch to prevent the ball from falling off the cliffs — still, it is estimated that around a thousand balls have been lost. The stands can accommodate up to 200 spectators, and entry is free.
During winter, the stadium disappears under snow and transforms into a ski slope, demonstrating the strong integration between football and the alpine environment.
The thin air at the altitude is seen as a natural ally for the local team, accustomed to the extreme conditions.
Most Isolated Stadium: A Symbol of Football in the Mountains
Since 2008, FC Gspon has maintained men’s and women’s teams and has hosted the Mountain Village European Championship, an event parallel to the Euro Championship.
The stadium has also gained international recognition: it was voted by Reader’s Digest as the strangest in the world and listed by Bleacher Report among the 20 with the most impressive views on the planet.
The Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena is more than just a football pitch — it is an icon of the sport played amidst the wild nature and isolation of the Swiss mountains.
