Located in the small village of Gspon, in the Valais canton of Switzerland, the Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena is recognized as the most isolated football stadium in the world. The arena also holds another notable title: it is the highest pitch in Europe, situated at 2,012 meters above sea level.
It belongs to the amateur club FC Gspon, founded in 1974, and is named after the legendary Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who financed the installation of the synthetic pitch in 2009.

During winter, the stadium disappears under snow and transforms into a ski slope, demonstrating the strong integration between football and the alpine environment.
The thin air at the altitude is seen as a natural ally for the local team, accustomed to the extreme conditions.
Most Isolated Stadium: A Symbol of Football in the Mountains
Since 2008, FC Gspon has maintained men’s and women’s teams and has hosted the Mountain Village European Championship, an event parallel to the Euro Championship.
The stadium has also gained international recognition: it was voted by Reader’s Digest as the strangest in the world and listed by Bleacher Report among the 20 with the most impressive views on the planet.
The Ottmar Hitzfeld Arena is more than just a football pitch — it is an icon of the sport played amidst the wild nature and isolation of the Swiss mountains.
