A Plane That Stayed Abandoned for 10 Years Surprises by Flying Again After a Meticulous Recovery Job by Engineers
Just like the story of the “little plane that could,” the attempted takeoff of the abandoned Il-96-300 aircraft is generating a lot of anticipation. This plane, which was one of the first Il-96-300 models built in 1992, spent a good part of its life idle, but now it seems ready to take to the skies again.
The aircraft, which made its last commercial flight with passengers in 2008, was parked for over a decade. During that time, a series of failures caused the Il-96-300 to be sidelined, alongside other planes in the same situation at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow, Russia.

The Il-96-300 is a wide-body commercial aircraft designed for long-haul flights and is powered by four high-bypass turbofan engines, the Aviadvigatel PS-90. Although the aircraft has been idle for so long, hopes of seeing it fly again were reignited after a recent video of its takeoff attempt.
The video, published on the OKandrew Planespotting channel on YouTube, shows the plane accelerating down the runway. In the first attempt, it failed to take off but only gained speed until the engines failed. However, in the second attempt, the Il-96-300 finally managed to gain altitude, although the landing gear was still down, which raised concerns among experts.
Flying with the landing gear down is a risky maneuver. According to the website Simple Flying, this can result in high fuel consumption and reduce the aircraft’s potential speed. Additionally, compromised aerodynamics and limited cruising altitude can be detrimental to the safety and comfort of passengers and crew, increasing noise and vibrations in the cabin.
Although this takeoff attempt was not perfect, it is a symbol of perseverance. The plane, which was once on the sidelines of commercial aviation, now has a new chance to return to the skies. Meanwhile, other aircraft, such as the F-16 fighter jet and the Monarch A320, continue to make exciting takeoffs, reminding us of the incredible powers that soar through the skies.
The recovery of the Il-96-300 is still an ongoing story, but what is clear is that the aircraft, after so many years at rest, has finally taken a step toward its rebirth in the skies.
