Best-Selling Sedan in the World Abandons Exclusively Internal Combustion Engine in the Japanese Market, Comes to Be Sold Only as Hybrid and Reinforces Toyota’s Global Strategy to Reduce Emissions Towards Carbon Neutrality by 2050.

Toyota began a historic change in the Japanese market in 2025 by ending all gasoline-only versions of the Corolla in its home country. Since the update of the line, the sedan has only been offered with hybrid systems, combining an internal combustion engine with electric motors.

In practice, this means the end of the purely gasoline Corolla in Japan, a market that served as a laboratory for several generations of the model over more than half a century. Hybrid versions take center stage and make the sedan a symbol of the transition to cleaner mobility within Toyota itself.

This decision does not occur in isolation. It aligns with the automaker’s environmental goals, which have committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, drastically reducing emissions throughout the lifecycle of vehicles.

For Brazilian consumers, this measure does not imply the immediate end of the combustion Corolla in the country but serves as a clear signal of the path Toyota intends to follow. The trend is to strengthen hybrid and flex hybrid models, already produced here, within a larger plan for the gradual electrification of the fleet.

Why the Gasoline Corolla Came to an End in Japan

One of the main reasons for the end of gasoline versions is the combination of regulatory pressure and stricter environmental goals in major Japanese cities. Local and national governments are increasing restrictions on more polluting vehicles, encouraging hybrid and electric technologies to reduce CO₂ and particulate emissions.

At the same time, Toyota has repeatedly stated in announcements that its strategy is to adopt a “multiple pathway” approach to decarbonizing the fleet, with hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, and even hydrogen.

The decision to transform the Japanese Corolla into a 100% hybrid line is part of this roadmap and helps reduce the brand’s average emissions in one of the world’s most demanding markets.

According to specialized sites like CarScoops and Asian market publications, the 2025 line update eliminated all exclusively internal combustion versions, only retaining hybrid and all-wheel-drive hybrid configurations. This move consolidates the Corolla as a showcase for Toyota’s electrification strategy in Japan.

How the New 2025 Corolla Hybrid Sold in the Japanese Market

In Japan, the Corolla Hybrid 2025 uses a 1.8-liter gasoline engine coupled with one or two electric motors, depending on the version. In front-wheel-drive configurations, the internal combustion engine works with a front electric motor; in E-Four versions, there is an additional electric motor on the rear axle, ensuring all-wheel drive when needed.

This setup prioritizes reduced consumption and emissions. In urban use, the hybrid system allows driving much of the time with electric assistance, decreasing fuel consumption and wear on components. The driving is also quieter at low speeds, a typical feature of hybrids that seek more comfort and smoothness in daily use.

In terms of appearance and equipment package, the Japanese Corolla received specific adjustments, such as 16-inch alloy wheels on the G version, 15-inch steel wheels on the X version, and full LED lighting across the line. There are also front and rear cameras, a digital key with remote access, and an expanded package of active safety assistances, reinforcing the sedan’s technological appeal.

Prices in Japan and Comparison with Compacts Sold in Brazil

According to market data released by specialized portals, the Corolla Hybrid X starts at 2,279,200 yen in Japan, while top-of-the-line versions can reach about 3.4 million yen.

Considering the recent average exchange rate of the yen against the real, this entry price is equivalent to about R$ 80 thousand in direct conversion, not including taxes and import costs. For a mid-size hybrid sedan, this number stands out when compared to the prices charged in Brazil for compact combustion cars.

Surveys by the automotive press show that the Volkswagen Polo Highline, one of the more expensive versions of the compact hatch, already exceeds R$ 120 thousand in the price list and may approach R$ 130 thousand to R$ 135 thousand in ads for more equipped zero-kilometer models.

In practice, this means that while in Japan a modern hybrid sedan may cost, in simple conversion, less than a top-line compact in Brazil, the Brazilian consumer still pays dearly for smaller and less efficient vehicles. This comparison helps explain why affordable sustainable mobility is still a challenge here.

What Changes for Brazil and the Future of Toyota’s Hybrids

Although headlines about the end of the Corolla may alarm some drivers, it’s important to emphasize that this measure currently applies to the Japanese market. In Brazil, the Corolla continues to be produced and sold, including the Corolla Altis Hybrid Flex version, which combines a 1.8 flex internal combustion engine with two electric motors and can use ethanol or gasoline.

According to Toyota do Brasil, the flex hybrid system of the national Corolla delivers a combined power of 122 hp and has received a specific extended warranty for the hybrid system components, which can last up to 10 years, depending on the maintenance performed at authorized service stations.

At the same time, the Brazilian operation is undergoing an industrial restructuring. The automaker has already announced the end of Corolla production in Indaiatuba by 2026, with manufacturing moving to Sorocaba, where a new cycle of investments focused on hybrids and flex hybrids, such as the Yaris Cross and future generations of the Corolla itself, will be concentrated.

After damage caused by a storm at the engine plant in Porto Feliz, Toyota announced it would resume production at the Sorocaba and Indaiatuba plants prioritizing precisely the hybrid versions of the Corolla and Corolla Cross, using imported engines until the unit fully recovers.

The end of the gasoline Corolla in Japan does not mean the disappearance of the model, but rather a change of course, with the sedan consolidating its role as a global platform for hybrid technologies, anticipating a trend that is likely to gain momentum in Brazil as environmental regulations, fuel costs, and consumer pressure move in the same direction.

In your case, what do you think of this change by Toyota? Do you think that the “goodbye to the gasoline Corolla” is a necessary step towards sustainable mobility, or do you see this as another sign that efficient and well-equipped cars will remain expensive and distant from the reality of most Brazilians?
