UK Oil & Gas Bets On Hydrogen Storage And New Pipeline In The United Kingdom, Expanding Energy Transition Projects And Strengthening The Sector’s Sustainable Infrastructure.

A UK Oil & Gas officially announced on Wednesday (October 1) a memorandum of understanding with National Gas Transmission to develop a new pipeline fully dedicated to the transportation of hydrogen in the United Kingdom.

The initiative, announced by Eixos agency, marks a decisive advance in the British energy transition and the construction of a robust infrastructure for low-carbon fuel.

Understand The Initiative Of UK Oil & Gas With The New Hydrogen Pipeline

Stephen Sanderson, CEO of UK Energy Storage, stated that this project is essential to establish an integrated hydrogen economy throughout the United Kingdom, from north to south.

The agreement incorporates UK Oil & Gas into Project Union, a national initiative aimed at interconnecting production, storage, and consumption centers of hydrogen — the so-called “clusters”.

The first phase of the project, with operational start scheduled for 2032, will connect the clusters of Teesside and Humberside, on the east coast of England, to the underground storage system in East Yorkshire.

The partnership with the operator of the UK gas network also strengthens the company’s access to government resources, especially in light of auctions scheduled for the first half of 2026, which will support hydrogen transport and storage models.

Energy Transition And Strategic Change Of UK Oil & Gas

In recent years, UK Oil & Gas has been reorienting its operations, gradually phasing out of the oil exploration sector. The company terminated its operations in Turkey, sold gas assets in the UK, and divested its subsidiary UKOG (GB), which held minority stakes in oil fields.

The company is evolving from a focus on oil exploration to becoming an innovative leader in clean energy solutions, the company highlighted in its semi-annual report.

This strategic change positions UK Oil & Gas as a key player in the construction of a modern and sustainable infrastructure, aligned with the UK’s climate goals. The emphasis on hydrogen as an energy vector is a direct reflection of this transformation.

South Dorset: Subterranean Hydrogen Storage In The United Kingdom

One of the company’s most ambitious projects is the subterranean hydrogen storage in South Dorset. According to a study by independent consultancy Quod, published in March 2025, the project could add £2.3 billion annually to the UK economy over its estimated lifespan of more than 30 years.

The preliminary engineering has confirmed the feasibility of installing 24 underground salt caverns, with a capacity of up to 1 billion cubic meters of hydrogen.

This will be the only planned large-scale storage project for the southern half of the country, being considered strategic for the decarbonization of the third largest CO₂ emissions cluster in the United Kingdom.

In addition to the environmental impact, the project also represents an opportunity for the generation of skilled jobs and regional development, with direct benefits for local communities.

Integration With The Dorset Clean Energy Super Cluster

UK Oil & Gas has also integrated with the Dorset Clean Energy Super Cluster, a £28 billion initiative that brings together hydrogen, carbon capture, offshore wind, and port infrastructure projects in southern England.

Additionally, two memoranda of understanding were signed with the Port of Portland to explore the import of liquid green hydrogen carriers and the production of up to 1 GW of hydrogen through electrolysis.

These actions broaden the company’s reach in the hydrogen value chain and reinforce its position as an agent of energy innovation. The synergy among production, transportation, and storage is essential to consolidate hydrogen as a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

UK Oil & Gas’s involvement in multiple fronts demonstrates an integrated and strategic approach, aligned with the UK’s carbon neutrality goals by 2050.

New Pipeline And H2 Infrastructure: Economic And Industrial Impact

The construction of the new pipeline and hydrogen storage projects has the potential to transform the UK energy matrix. The interconnection of clusters will allow greater flexibility in supply, energy security, and reduced logistical costs.

Studies indicate that hydrogen could represent up to 20% of the UK’s energy consumption by 2050, with applications in transportation, heavy industry, and residential heating. The infrastructure proposed by UK Oil & Gas is a decisive step to make this scenario feasible.

Moreover, the new pipeline will allow hydrogen produced in different regions to be distributed efficiently, connecting industrial centers and end consumers. This national network will be vital to ensure the UK’s competitiveness in the global clean energy market.

Regulatory Challenges And Perspectives For Hydrogen In The United Kingdom

Despite the advances, the sector faces regulatory, technological, and financial challenges. The economic viability of hydrogen depends on consistent public policies, incentives for innovation, and integration with other renewable sources.

Government support, through auctions and subsidies, will be crucial to accelerate the implementation of the new pipeline and consolidate the role of hydrogen in the energy transition.

The participation of UK Oil & Gas in projects like Project Union and the Dorset Clean Energy Super Cluster demonstrates alignment with these guidelines and commitment to sustainability.

Another critical point is the standardization of technologies and certifications, which will enable greater interoperability between systems and increased investor confidence. Collaboration between companies, government, and academia will be essential to overcome these barriers.

Hydrogen As An Energy Innovation And Leadership Vector

The signing of the memorandum with National Gas Transmission on October 1, 2025 marks a turning point in the trajectory of UK Oil & Gas. By investing in a new pipeline 100% dedicated to hydrogen and subterranean storage projects, the company positions itself as a key player in the energy transition in the United Kingdom.

With strategic vision and a focus on innovation, UK Oil & Gas is shaping the future of clean energy in the United Kingdom.

These initiatives not only drive the UK economy but also contribute to global decarbonization and to meeting international climate goals. The company’s engagement with energy clusters, ports, and local communities reinforces its role as an agent of transformation and sustainability.
