A new driver of tension appears in Europe with the construction of a huge air base by the USA, located in Romania, very close to Ukraine.
Europe is about to witness a new driver of tension in the geopolitical scenario. The US is building a colossal air base in Romania, which borders Ukraine. This development raises concerns about the escalation of conflict in the region, especially after recent threats from Vladimir Putin, who promises a firm response.
The military situation in Europe is increasingly delicate. As the war in Ukraine drags on, the NATO, led by the US, is expanding its presence in the region with the construction of a gigantic air base in Romania. This new facility, called Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, is located close to the city of Constanta, on the shores of the Black Sea, and has a vital strategic importance due to its proximity to areas of geopolitical interest, such as the Black Sea itself and Eastern Europe.

US and NATO base being designed to house up to 10.000 troops
A basis, which is in the process of expansion, is being designed to house up to 10.000 American troops and a fleet of nuclear-capable bombers. The total project is estimated to cost around 2,7 billion dollars, making it the largest NATO air base in all of Europe. construction includes new hangars, fuel tanks, flight simulators, living quarters and a second runway, which makes it a true “unsinkable aircraft carrier” in southeastern Europe.
New base in Romania
They new military engine in Europe is not only a response to recent Russian actions, such as the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, but also is seen as a preventative measure against future aggression. The Ramstein base in Germany, which for decades was NATO's main air operations center, will be surpassed by the new base in Romania, which will be up to 17% higher.
Further increasing your operational capacity
The military presence in the region has already begun to increase. In June, seven Finnish Air Force F/A-18 Hornet fighters arrived at the base to conduct training and live missions along the Black Sea coast. Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters and Romanian F-16s are operating together to protect NATO airspace and ensure the safety of the Romanian population. The base is also expected to receive MQ-9 Reaper drones, further increasing its operational capacity.
31 countries are part of NATO, including the USA, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Turkey, among others. The organization was created in 1949 with the aim of ensuring the collective security of its members, based on the principle that an attack against one is considered an attack against all.
Expansion of the base was denounced by Russia
However, This movement did not go unnoticed through Moscow. Russian Senator Andrei Klimov warned that the base's proximity to Russian borders could make it one of the first targets in the event of a retaliatory attack.. The expansion of the Mihail Kogălniceanu base was denounced by Russia as a clear NATO provocation, and the The Kremlin has already said that any Western advance close to Russian borders will be considered a direct threat.
In July, the tension reached another level when two US B-52 bombers, with nuclear capacity, flew over Romania, coming dangerously close to Russian airspace. These bombers, which departed from Louisiana and reached Europe via the Arctic, surrounded strategic military sites on Russia's Kola Peninsula, prompting the Russian Air Force to dispatch MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighters to intercept them. Although Russia claims the B-52s were forced to return, the USA denies this version.
“until the end”
Putin, in turn, did not hesitate to respond to Western actions. He reiterated that Russia is ready to go “to the end” in the war with Ukraine, should NATO continue to expand its presence in Europe. Since Finland's accession to NATO in April 2023 and Sweden's accession in March 2024, tension between Russia and the West has only increased.
A construction of this new base flight in Romania, which borders Ukraine, marks a new chapter in the already turbulent history of relations between the West and Russia. With the escalation of the US and NATO military presence in Europe, the future of security on the continent appears increasingly uncertain. The next actions on both sides will be decisive in determining the course of this geopolitical crisis.
