With an Investment of R$ 7.8 Billion from H2Brazil, Minas Gerais Consolidates as a Fertilizer Production Hub from Green Hydrogen, Boosting Industrial Decarbonization.
Uberaba, in Minas Gerais, stands out again in the green hydrogen scene. The city has attracted a second major project for fertilizer production. The company H2Brazil announced a significant investment in the region. This move reinforces Uberaba’s role as a strategic center for hydrogen development in Brazil.
H2Brazil Announces Billion-Dollar Investment in New Mine Plant
H2Brazil confirmed on Thursday (22/5) the signing of agreements for two significant green hydrogen projects in Brazil. One will be implemented in Uberaba’s Export Processing Zone (ZPE). The other will be located at the Port of Açu, in Rio de Janeiro.
The plant in Minas Gerais aims to produce nitrogen fertilizers. These will be derived from green hydrogen. The project anticipates a capacity of up to 820 MW by 2030. The estimated investment is R$ 7.8 billion, equivalent to €1.24 billion. The announcement occurred during a hydrogen sector event in the Netherlands.

Why Uberaba? Renewable Potential and Strategic Logistics for Hydrogen
Pedro Caçorino, CEO of H2Brazil, explained the choice of Brazil and Uberaba. He highlighted the abundance of renewable sources. He also mentioned the national electric matrix, which is already considered 100% green. “With exceptional hydroelectric, solar, and wind resources and a power grid internationally recognized as 100% green, we can produce green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as ammonia, at globally competitive prices,” said Caçorino.
In addition to H2Brazil’s initiative, Uberaba is already hosting another hydrogen project. Atlas Agro is planning a future plant to produce green ammonia, also from hydrogen. The region is seen as strategic. It is close to agricultural activity and has a well-established road transport logistics. This facilitates the flow of production. The area also offers a large supply of renewable energy and an abundance of water, essential raw materials for hydrogen produced via electrolysis.
Partnerships Boost Viability of Green Hydrogen in the Region
The viability of H2Brazil’s project in Uberaba involved several partnerships. Nathália Ervedosa, COO of the company, cited agreements with the Government of Minas Gerais and Invest Minas. She also mentioned the Uberaba City Hall and CEMIG. “These alliances allow us to access the infrastructure and regulatory environment necessary to offer green hydrogen at truly competitive prices, promoting the real decarbonization of industry,” said Ervedosa.
Expansion of the Hydrogen Economy
In addition to Uberaba, H2Brazil confirmed its second major project at the Port of Açu. This unit in Rio de Janeiro will focus on the production of e-methanol. The e-methanol will be produced from green hydrogen. The project will leverage the logistical infrastructure of the port-industry complex. The main goal is the export of hydrogen and its derivatives.
Miguel Lourenço, CFO of the company, commented on the initiatives. “These synergies accelerate our vision to build a sustainable and scalable hydrogen economy in Brazil,” he concluded.
Port of Açu as a Low-Carbon Hub and Route for Excess
The Port of Açu already has a licensed area for a low-carbon energy hub. This development aims to tap into Brazil’s potential in the international supply chain of synthetic fuels. Mauro de Andrade, director of Prumo Logística, the controlling company of the Port of Açu, commented to the agency on the axes. He stated that the excess production of green fertilizers from H2Brazil’s unit in Uberaba could also be exported through the Fluminense port.
