Turkish Ship Cenk T, Loaded With Fruits And Vegetables, Hit By Russian Drone In Port Of Odessa Region, No Injuries, Amid Attacks On Civil Infrastructure And Diplomatic Tensions In The Black Sea

A Turkish roll-on/roll-off commercial vessel was hit by a Russian drone while docked at a port in the Odessa region on Friday, December 12, during a series of strikes against Ukrainian civilian port infrastructure, escalating diplomatic and military risks in the Black Sea.

The Cenk T was struck around 4 PM local time, shortly after docking at the port of Chornomorsk in the Odessa region, during drone and missile attacks aimed at Ukrainian civilian port infrastructure.

According to reports, the vessel was transporting solely food supplies, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and consumer goods, on the sea route between Karasu and Odesa, without any type of military equipment or cargo.

According to the Turkish maritime company Cenk Shipping, the owner of the ship, the impact caused a fire on board, recorded in videos circulating on social media, showing an object moving at high speed moments before the explosion.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attack was likely carried out by a Geran-2 drone, the Russian version of the Iranian-made Shahed model, widely used in aerial operations in the Ukrainian conflict.

Despite the fire and structural damage, no crew members were injured or killed, and the damages were classified as limited, without compromising the vessel’s navigability, which remained operational after the incident.

Attacks On Civil Infrastructure And Ukrainian Reaction

The Ukrainian Minister of Restoration, Oleksiy Kuleba, stated on Telegram that Russia launched a missile attack against civilian port infrastructure in the Odessa region, reinforcing accusations of non-military targets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X that the attack demonstrates Russia’s refusal to take diplomatic initiatives seriously and the continuation of actions intended to destroy normal life in the country.

Zelensky added that the international community needs to maintain a clear moral compass to distinguish between those prolonging the war with ballistic missiles against civilians and those seeking to end it through peace efforts.

Diplomatic Impact And Turkey’s Role

Sources indicate that two other Turkish vessels were also hit and damaged during the attacks, raising the severity of the episode, as Turkey is a NATO member and plays a strategic role in the Black Sea.

The situation becomes even more sensitive due to Turkey’s exclusive control of the Bosporus Strait, the only link between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, an essential route for Russian exports of products such as oil.

Hours before the attack, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had discussed with Vladimir Putin the possibility of a limited ceasefire involving ports and energy infrastructure, an attempt that received no effective response.

Maritime Escalation And Regional Risks

Analysts believe that such attacks serve as retaliation and warnings, amid increased Ukrainian actions against the so-called Russian parallel fleet, used to circumvent international sanctions.

Ukraine has also intensified maritime attacks in the Caspian Sea, leading Moscow to threaten to isolate the country from the sea, resulting in offensives against ports and ships, including foreign-flagged vessels.

It is still unclear whether the Cenk T was an intentional target or collateral damage, but the episode increases the risk of regional escalation and exposes the fragility of civilian commercial navigation in active conflict zones, worsening the situation in the Black Sea.
