Besides The Multinationals Shell, Galp, and Equinor, The Brazilian Oil Giant Petrobras Also Signed A New Contract With The Bahia Gas Company For Supply Of The Input Starting In January

As of January 1, 2022, the Bahia Gas Company – Bahiagás, which has always had Petrobras as its supplier, will begin receiving natural gas from new companies. Contracts with the multinationals Shell, Galp, and Equinor, winners of the Public Call initiated last June, have already been signed and will come into effect at the beginning of the year. In parallel, as a result of bilateral negotiations, contracts have been signed with PetroReconcavo and Origem, which will also start in 2022.

Bahiagás, Which Has Always Had Petrobras As Its Main Supplier, Will Begin Receiving Natural Gas From Eight Different Companies, Including Giants Shell, Galp, And Equinor

In addition to them, Petrobras, Which Also Participated In The Public Call And Was Already Acting As A Supplier To Bahiagás, Will Sign A New Contract With The Company For Supply Starting In January. The State Company’s entry among the winners of the selection process came after the withdrawal of Compass, which had been among those selected.

With the new contracts, Bahiagás, which since the beginning of its activities has had Petrobras as its main supplier, will start receiving natural gas provided by eight different companies, including the state company. This means that starting next year, more than 70% of the energy acquired by Bahiagás will be delivered by new suppliers, with about 26% of it coming from onshore production in Bahia.

The Secretary of Infrastructure of Bahia, Marcus Cavalcanti, believes that with the signing of the contracts, the price of gas can become more competitive and stimulate the state’s economy. “As part of the state government’s public policy to seek natural gas suppliers at lower prices, Bahiagás conducted a Public Call and was able to offer the gas molecule at a better value to the people of Bahia and especially to industries, which are the largest consumers. The government’s guideline for Bahiagás to acquire natural gas from onshore wells and fields also allowed for the economic viability for small entrepreneurs to acquire wells at auctions by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) or directly from Petrobras, through the asset demobilization plan,” emphasizes the secretary.

“We are ending the year with yet another success in the supply area. After our last Public Call, we have eight suppliers and nine contracts signed. With this, we have the most diversified natural gas acquisition portfolio in the country and are less dependent on Petrobras,” highlighted Bahiagás President Luiz Gavazza.

The Bahia Gas Company Is A Pioneer In Brazil In The Process Of Diversifying Natural Gas Supply Sources

Bahiagás is a pioneer in the country in the process of diversifying natural gas supply sources. In 2007, the Company signed its first contract with an independent producer, the ERG Consortium, which explored a well on Itaparica Island, Bahia.

Additionally, Bahiagás was the first state concessionaire of piped natural gas to conduct a Public Call for the acquisition of the energy. The initiative caught the market’s attention and served as a reference for other distributors in the segment to conduct new public calls.

“Since then, we have been experimenting and developing this tool for the acquisition of natural gas at more competitive prices and conditions. The practice has worked so well that in 2021 we concluded our fourth Public Call,” added Gavazza.
