The Grandiose Construction of the Ayrton Senna Bridge That Changed History
If you think you have seen everything in terms of impressive constructions, get ready to learn about the story of the construction of the Ayrton Senna Bridge! This engineering masterpiece not only redefined standards but also brought unprecedented integration between regions and countries.
Located on BR-163 over the Paraná River, at the border between Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraguay, the construction of the Ayrton Senna Bridge was a milestone in Brazilian engineering. For a long time, it was considered one of the largest river bridges in the country, second only to the road-rail bridge over the Paraná River, with a minimal difference of 100 meters—which does not diminish the grandeur of the project.
Senna Did Not Have the Opportunity to See the Construction

The bridge was named in honor of the great racing champion, Ayrton Senna, one of the country’s greatest athletes. In 1980, the driver competed in Guaíra in a karting competition, drawing everyone’s attention for his professionalism and passion for speed. Unfortunately, Senna did not have the opportunity to see the construction that bears his name, as his career was cut short by a tragedy in 1994.

Israel, Greece, and Cyprus signed an agreement in 2020 to transport gas from the Mediterranean to Europe via a 1,872 km pipeline, but Turkey claimed sovereignty over part of the maritime route, and the project never materialized.
The construction of the Ayrton Senna Bridge began in 1985, when Eletrosul decided to build the bridge to serve the Ilha Grande hydropower complex. In October of the following year, an agreement with the National Department of Roadways allowed the start of the works. However, construction was suspended in July 1990. Three years later, the Paraná DNER entered into a new agreement with the national DNER and took on the responsibility to complete the bridge, which was finally inaugurated on January 24, 1998, after approximately 12 years of construction.
Construction of the Ayrton Senna Bridge Enabled Integration
The construction of the Ayrton Senna Bridge enabled the integration of agricultural frontiers in the North and Midwest regions with the South region. Previously, this connection was made by ferry, a method that took a long time and did not always ensure quality in the crossing, due to the longer time and high risks involved.
This mega construction is approximately 3,600 meters long, divided into four sections. The first section consists of 30 spans of 32 meters apart; the second section is made up of 24 spans of 32 meters; the third section, over the navigation channel, has 2 spans of 52 meters apart; and the fourth section consists of 41 spans with 52 meters between the supports. The project was designed to support 45 tons per span.
The Only Bridge in the World, as of Now, with a Toboggan-Shaped Curve in the Central Part
An interesting fact about the construction of the Ayrton Senna Bridge is that it is the only bridge in the world, as of now, with a toboggan-shaped curve in the central part. Many people think that the curve in the central span refers to the name of the bridge, where the “S” stands for Senna, but there is a technical explanation. In 1982, there was a project for the construction of a hydropower plant in the region by the federal government. However, this project was unsuccessful due to the lack of incentives. The original project foresaw a barrier in a small stretch for the bridge, but when the construction of the power plant was halted, a large part of the bridge stretch was already installed. To avoid interfering with the concrete part of the Ilha Grande hydropower plant, the geometric shape resembling an “S” was chosen, not interfering with the dam’s works if they were resumed.
Technical Data
In 1995, after a request from residents demanding the completion of the bridge—a movement known in the region as “Ponte Já”—the works resumed. Technical data indicate that the access segment to the bridge on the Paraná side is 946.39 meters long, and on the Mato Grosso do Sul side, 950 meters. Its lane is 7.20 meters wide, plus 2.80 meters of shoulder. It was built on 98 concrete columns within the river, with spans of 32, 42, and 52 meters, and a maximum height of the navigation channel of 13 meters.
Has the Bridge Ever Undergoing Major Renovation?
Since its inauguration, the bridge has never undergone a major renovation. Therefore, the government of the state of Paraná and other partners came together to discuss improvements, with a revitalization in the area being debated. The forecast for the start of the works was in 2022, aiming to correct pathological manifestations, signage, asphalt recovery, lighting replacement, and other services, with an estimated duration of 18 months.
Construction of the Ayrton Senna Bridge Marked a Dream of Over 40 Years
The construction of the Ayrton Senna Bridge marked a dream of over 40 years for the regional population, bringing progress and integration. On the day of its inauguration, there was a half marathon symbolizing the welcome and progress for the entire region. The average daily traffic volume on the bridge is 15,000 vehicles, mainly consisting of passenger cars.
This news can be accessed directly on the government website of Paraná to follow each stage. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the entire team that was in charge of the project and execution, making this mega construction in Brazil possible, marked by the beautiful landscape and incredible nature that brought progress to an entire nation, especially for Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraguay.
