The Unbelievable Is Happening: Sustainable High-Tech Megacity in the Desert Is Being Built by Saudi Arabia
Recently, drone videos shared on social media show excavators digging a straight hole in the middle of the desert, already in the shape of the construction of the ambitious and controversial city “The Line”, which will be the largest project in Saudi Arabia and possibly in the world. Announced in 2017, the project was initially met with skepticism, being considered by many as a utopia pulled from a science fiction movie. However, over the past five years, the plan has advanced rapidly, generating doubts and expectations, according to the video from the channel Urbana.
The “The Line” in the Saudi Arabian desert will be 170 km long, 500 meters high, and 200 meters wide. However, the images from the initial excavation do not exactly match these measurements, raising the possibility that this first excavation is preparatory for the high-speed transport system that will be built along the length of the city.

Capacity for 9 Million People in the Desert City
Designed to house 9 million people, the Saudi Arabian city will operate entirely on renewable energy sources, including wind and solar parks. Water will be sourced from a desalination plant that will not emit carbon in its process. The proposal states that all daily activities and services will be reachable within minutes for each individual, and that high-speed transit will take no more than 20 minutes from one end to the other.

A startup backed by OpenAI has started selling a $20,000 robot for household tasks, but when the robot doesn’t know what to do, an employee puts on a virtual reality headset, sees the inside of the house through a camera, and operates each movement. The CEO said that without this, he cannot improve the product.
However, there are significant challenges to be overcome. The technology for the high-speed transit system is still unclear, and achieving speeds of up to 510 km per hour is a feat that surpasses the performance of the fastest public train in the world, the Shanghai Maglev, which reaches 460 km/h.
The Project and Sustainability
In addition to technological challenges, the project for the Saudi Arabian desert also faces criticism related to human rights and environmental impacts. The desert climate of the country presents challenges, such as the potential increase in temperature around the mirrored city, which could reflect heat to the surrounding area. Environmental planning experts also point out that the mirrored line may disrupt bird flight, displace wildlife, and obstruct soil and water flow.
The total cost of the Saudi Arabian desert project, including “The Line,” is estimated at one trillion dollars, which represents a significant economic challenge for Saudi Arabia, which has yet to attract foreign investment due to concerns about human rights.
