Brazilian Economy Created 173,139 Formal Jobs in February This Year, According to the General Registry of Employed and Unemployed (Caged).

This Represents The Best Result For February Months Since 2014, When 260,823 Formal Job Openings Were Created. It Is The Best Balance For This Month In Five Years. A Result That Indicates A Consistent Recovery For 2019, Evaluates The Special Secretary Of Social Security And Labor, Rogério Marinho.

The 260,823 job openings, according to numbers from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed (Caged) released this Monday, 25, by the Ministry of Economy, is the result of 1,453,284 hires in the period against 1,280,145 terminations. The average hiring salary last month was R$ 1,559, a real increase (after inflation) of 0.06% compared to the same month last year. The termination salary was R$ 1,718, a real decrease of 0.36% in this comparison base. “This number is a demonstration that the changes proposed for the economy under the Bolsonaro government, which address deregulation, de-bureaucratization, and removal of obstacles, provide security for the real economy,” said Rogério Marinho. The government, however, has faced turbulence in its articulation with Congress for the approval of the social security reform, the main project in the economic area.

Analyzed Activities

In February, 7 out of the 8 activities analyzed by Caged recorded a positive balance for job creation. The highlights are services, manufacturing industry, and public administration. The activity of agriculture, forestry, hunting, and fishing, on the other hand, recorded a net loss of 3,077 positions.

In the geographical breakdown, 4 regions showed a positive employment balance in February. Only the Northeast went in the opposite direction.

Of the total job openings created, 7,750 (4.5%) were through intermittent or part-time work. In January, 8,299 hires and 3,953 terminations were recorded in so-called intermittent work. The balance was 4,346. In the same period last year, the result had been 2.1 thousand jobs. Created through labor reform, this modality allows shifts on alternate days or for set hours.

In The First Two Months Of The Year, there was a net creation of 207.4 thousand job openings, 68.4 thousand more than in the same period last year, when the result was positive at 139 thousand, according to the ministry. On the other hand, Brazil started the year with an increase in the unemployment rate to the highest level in five months, according to the latest data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

According to the Secretary of Labor, Bruno Dalcolmo, it is statistically normal during recovery moments for unemployment shown by Pnad to increase, since, according to him, this contingent previously classified as inactive or discouraged is now being accounted for as “unemployed”, which ends up raising the unemployment rate. In the latest Pnad data, referring to the quarter ending in January 2019, the number of discouraged workers, or the number of workers who gave up looking for a job, was 4.716 million, an increase from 4.706 million in the quarter ending in December.
