The Construction of the New Factories of the American Multinational Is Part of a Package of US$ 180 Million Dedicated Between 2022 and 2024 to Increasing Production.

The world’s largest glass packaging manufacturer, the American multinational Owens-Illinois (O-I), will invest around R$ 1 billion in the construction of two new factories in Brazil, marking the first effective capacity expansion movement in the local industry in the last ten years. The information was reported on Friday (6) by the newspaper Valor Econômico. Investment Package of the American Multinational

According to the website AMANHÃ, Owens-Illinois’ investment is part of a package of US$ 680 million that the multinational will dedicate, between 2022 and 2024, to increasing production in markets facing supply constraints and to introducing a technology that transforms the glass production process. According to the article, currently between 10% and 15% of Brazilian demand for bottles is met by imports.

“The factories will start producing in the third quarter of 2023 and, by summer, the market will have returned to balance”, said the company’s president for South America, Hugo Ladeira, to Valor. The two new units will be located in the Rio-São Paulo axis and the Southern region, but the exact location is still being discussed with customers.

One of the New Factories May Be Built in the South

The goal of these discussions, according to the report, is to shorten the distance between the factory and the customer, since freight significantly impacts packaging costs – depending on the distance, it can cost more than the bottle or jar itself. The new production, which increases the total capacity of the Brazilian industry by 15% to 20%, or by more than 650 million units per year, is fully negotiated, and construction will begin between November and December.

The Brazilian Union of Viticulture (Uvibra) has been working to attract investors with the intention of bringing a new packaging factory to Rio Grande do Sul, where 90% of national production is concentrated. The first meeting occurred with a group of companies at that time. They had expressed interest in investing in Serra Gaúcha, due to the presence of gas pipelines in the region and the logistical ease of being near the largest wine production hub in Brazil. However, Uvibra stated to the Blog that it has not had negotiations with the American company.

The governor of Santa Catarina, Carlos Moisés, met with businessmen from CAB Motors to discuss the establishment of a new jeep factory. The company that produces the Stark jeep intends to set up a plant in Imbituba, in the south of the state of Santa Catarina, with an investment of approximately R$ 100 million, which should generate 300 direct jobs.

Businessmen from the group were received to discuss the matter with the state’s executive head and secretaries. “We are excited about the project and want to be partners. We will form a working group to analyze the company’s conditions and try to bring this investment of the factory to Santa Catarina, which will bring more jobs and income,” said the governor. CAB Motors intends to set up its new factory in the Imbituba region, in the south of Santa Catarina, due to the Processing and Exporting Zone, which offers tax advantages. The working group to discuss with the company will be led by the State Secretariat of Sustainable Economic Development (SDE).
