Fazenda Vale das Palmeiras
Fazenda Vale das Palmeiras is the realization of Marcos Palmeira‘s rural project. The property is situated in the beautiful mountainous region of Teresópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Founded by the actor in 1997, the farm covers a total area of 220 hectares.
Marcos Palmeira acquired the land over two decades ago, fulfilling a personal dream inspired by his grandfather. However, upon arrival, he found a degraded area with very little plant production.
The Discovery of Marcos Palmeira
The transition of Marcos Palmeira to organic agriculture was motivated by a striking discovery. He realized that the producers working in the region at the time did not consume the food they grew. The reason was the excessive use of pesticides, referred to by them as “poison”. “How are we going to eat if we are putting poison every day?” was the response he heard that profoundly marked him. “That sparked a light in me”, said Marcos Palmeira in an interview.
This revelation drove him to seek alternatives, leading him to take a course on organic farming. Since its founding, Fazenda Vale das Palmeiras has adopted organic and sustainable practices, and is certified. It does not use pesticides or chemical fertilizers and employs soil and water conservation techniques.
Award-Winning Cheese
One of the highlights of the production of Marcos Palmeira‘s farm is the organic Minas Frescal Cheese. This product won a Gold Medal at the first edition of the prestigious “Cheese Guide”, competing with 120 cheeses from all over Brazil. The secret lies in the careful process. The milk used comes from cows raised freely, free of pesticides, hormones, and agrochemicals, and fed with enriched organic grass.
This management results in more natural milk, with a higher content of nutrients and antioxidants. In addition to the frescal cheese, the dairy area of the farm produces Padrão Minas Cheese, Ricotta, and Cottage Cheese. The judges of the award described Marcos Palmeira‘s cheese as “mild, dairy, and sweet”.
Reforestation and Sustainability
Marcos Palmeira‘s commitment to the environment is visible in the farm’s actions. A notable initiative is the reforestation project of the Atlantic Forest, carried out in partnership with the Institute for Environmental Preservation (ITPA). The ambitious goal is to recover over 1.3 million square meters (130 hectares) within the property.
For this, it is planned to plant around 200,000 seedlings of native species, such as Jussara, Jequitibá, Aroeira, and Pau Ferro. This area will join the existing Private Reserves of Natural Heritage (RPPNs) on the farm. A recent post on the farm’s Instagram celebrated the progress, claiming that “nature benefits 100% from this with more waters, more animals, and more life”.
Diversity of Products and Social Impact of Fazenda Vale das Palmeiras
Fazenda Vale das Palmeiras, under the management of Marcos Palmeira, goes beyond dairy products. The property also cultivates and sells other organic products, such as coffee, honey, vegetables, and even chocolate. The cocoa for the chocolate comes from Marcos Palmeira‘s family’s farm in Bahia. The coffee and honey result from partnerships with local producers and cooperatives. Currently, the marketing of dairy products (cheeses and yogurt) is limited to the state of Rio de Janeiro, as the farm only has the state inspection seal. The products are found in supermarket chains, local markets, home delivery, and online sales.
In addition to production, the farm has a social impact. It houses 80 head of cattle and directly employs 15 people. In collaboration with institutions such as Embrapa, it offers training for rural professionals, disseminating sustainable agricultural practices. It also promotes courses in cheese production, naturally leavened bread, and other organic techniques. Vale das Palmeiras positions itself as an example of how it is possible to combine economic development and socio-environmental responsibility.
