A merchant ship was found adrift in the Atlantic in 1872 without a sign of its crew. The story remains one of the greatest mysteries of maritime navigation.

On December 4, 1872, a mystery began to unfold in the Atlantic. Sailors from a Canadian brigantine (type of vessel used for various purposes) spotted from a distance the ship Mary Celeste, apparently adrift, about 400 miles (approx. 644 km) east of the Azores.

What appeared to be a seaworthy and well-stocked ship was completely empty. There was no one on board. No captain, no crew, no passengers. Just the ship and the silence of the ocean.

This event marked the start of one of the greatest enigmas of maritime history. “What happened to the ten people who were on board the Mary Celeste?” is a question that resonates to this day among scholars of nautical mysteries.

The Journey of the Ship That Entered History

Originally named Amazon, the ship was built in 1861 in Nova Scotia. Initially, it led a common life, transporting cargo across the Atlantic, between the West Indies, England, and the Mediterranean.

However, after some setbacks and even a shipwreck in Cape Breton, it was purchased by Richard W. Haines, an American businessman, who restored it and renamed it Mary Celeste.

In the fall of 1872, the ship was loaded with 1,701 barrels of industrial alcohol, bound for Genoa, Italy.

Benjamin Spooner Briggs, the captain of the Mary Celeste, departed from New York accompanied by his wife, his two-year-old daughter, and seven crew members.

Aboard, they faced stormy seas, but the ship’s log was last filled out on November 25 of that year. From then on, silence.

The Discovery of the Abandoned Ship

It was only nine days later that the Dei Gratia found the Mary Celeste. Captain David Morehouse, intrigued, decided to investigate.

The ship was in great condition to sail, with its cargo intact. However, the lifeboat had disappeared, and the crew seemed to have abandoned the vessel under unknown circumstances.

Morehouse took the ship to Gibraltar and reported the incident to local authorities. From there, he sent a telegram to the Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company, describing the state of the Mary Celeste.

The mystery captivated the American press. Speculations arose regarding mutinies, piracy, or even the involvement of the alcohol being transported.

Theories and Mysteries

Nothing was ever heard again from the crew of the Mary Celeste.

In Gibraltar, investigations ruled out any illicit acts, but this did not quell curious minds. Journalists and writers began to create increasingly elaborate versions to explain the mystery.

The renowned writer Arthur Conan Doyle even wrote a fictional story called “The Captain of the ‘Polaris’,” suggesting that the crew was attacked by an African group. Although creative, the theory lacked any concrete evidence.

Decades later, new investigations pointed to more plausible hypotheses.

A Smithsonian documentary suggested that Captain Briggs ordered the evacuation of the ship due to problems with the water pumps, which may have been clogged with coal residue from a previous voyage.

He may have believed the Mary Celeste was about to sink, but the hasty evacuation could have led to tragedy.

A Riddle That Will Never Be Solved

As the years passed, the stories about the Mary Celeste blended into fiction and folklore. Despite numerous theories, the absence of survivors or concrete evidence keeps the mystery alive.

The Mary Celeste remains a symbol of intrigue and imagination, sailing in a sea of unanswered questions.

Just like the winds that carried it adrift, the mystery of its missing crew will continue to blow through the pages of history.
