Competitors, beware, because the German multinational Volkswagen has come out strong regarding the slogan “Way to Zero” adopted to symbolize the automaker’s electric car era and confirmed that it will have six new giant battery factories for electric cars distributed throughout Europe, starting with the one in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony (Germany), scheduled to open in 2025.

Furthermore, the German automaker stated that it will open a new company focused on the electric battery sector that will also handle the recycling of batteries that are no longer useful.

Thomas Schmall, member of the Technology Board of Volkswagen AG and CEO of Volkswagen Group Components states: “We want to offer our customers powerful, economical, and sustainable vehicle batteries, which means we need to be active at every stage of the battery value chain that is essential for success.”

Volkswagen Has Already Defined Where The Second Of The 6 Gigafactories Will Be Located

Volkswagen, which holds 20% of Northvolt’s shares, will build the second of the 6 gigafactories in Sweden in partnership with the startup. The German automaker has not yet defined the other four locations that will host its electric car battery factories, but according to VW, all should be operational by 2030, the year set by the multinational to have 70% of sales concentrated in 100% electric cars.

“Now we are concentrating our energy in Salzgitter, with the aim of fostering innovation and ensuring the support of the best partners for our new company in the future. We already have a strong battery team in Salzgitter composed of 500 employees from 24 countries – and we continue to strengthen this team at the leadership level,” concluded the brand executive.

For those who don’t know, Volkswagen recently announced a joint effort with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, at the German group’s Innovation Center in the United States.

The company will develop a higher-power wireless charger using innovative designs that focus electromagnetic waves to eliminate interference and, consequently, increase efficiency.

The prototype showed a high level of efficiency in the initial tests, where 98% of the energy used (coil to coil) could reach the vehicle’s battery.
