With an Updated 1.2 Turbo Engine and a Focus on Comfort, the New Chevrolet Montana Has Repositioned Itself in the Brazilian Market to Directly Challenge the Fiat Toro, Leaving Behind Its Former Vocational for Heavy Work

The strategy of the new Chevrolet Montana was clear: to transform the pickup into a “SUV with a bed.” The Premier 2025 version, with 141 horsepower and a price of R$ 159.990 in June 2025, prioritizes drivability, technology, and efficiency, targeting a new consumer profile. However, the change raises a central question: is this new identity enough to surpass the robustness and versatility of its main competitor?

The Strategy Behind the Change, Abandoning Work for Leisure

General Motors made a bold decision with the new Chevrolet Montana. Instead of competing in the heavy-duty segment dominated by the Fiat Strada, the company targeted a different niche: consumers who value comfort and leisure. The idea was to create a vehicle that combined the best of both worlds.

To achieve this, the pickup was built on the same platform as the Tracker SUV. This choice resulted in drivability very close to that of a passenger car, eliminating the common “bounces” at the rear seen in pickups with an empty bed. However, this base brought a crucial limitation: the owner’s manual prohibits the installation of a tow hitch, a decision that clearly defines its audience.

To compensate, the focus was on the versatility of the “Multi-Flex” bed. With 874 liters, it functions as a giant and secure trunk, presenting a sealing system against water and dust superior to that of the competitor.

Technical Analysis of the New Chevrolet Montana Premier 2025

The 2025 line brought an important mechanical update. To comply with the Proconve L8 regulations, the 1.2 Turbo engine now features direct fuel injection. This increased the power from 133 hp to 141 hp with ethanol.

This change directly impacted performance. The acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h, with gasoline, decreased from 10.1 to 9.5 seconds, surpassing the Fiat Toro 1.3T. The most impressive part is that the gain in agility did not compromise efficiency. The urban fuel consumption with gasoline remained at 11.0 km/l, while highway consumption improved to 13.5 km/l, according to official data.

In terms of capacity, the new Chevrolet Montana offers a payload of 600 kg, lower than the 670 kg of the Toro, reinforcing its leisure-oriented proposal. Despite being smaller externally, the passenger space in the back seat is competitive, surpassing the Toro in headroom.

The Direct Confrontation, New Chevrolet Montana Premier vs. Fiat Toro Volcano T270

Putting the two models side by side reveals two different philosophies. The 1.2 Turbo engine of the Montana prioritizes agility for daily use. On the other hand, the 1.3 T270 engine of the Toro, with its 185 hp, focuses on raw power, ideal for those who need more performance when the vehicle is loaded.

In dimensions, the Toro is 22 cm longer and has a larger bed volume (937 liters). This difference, along with the higher payload capacity, attracts consumers looking for a more traditional and robust pickup.

The sales figures reflect this difference in proposal. In 2024, the Fiat Toro sold 53,848 units, almost double the 27,724 of the Montana. The main reason is Fiat’s portfolio strategy, which offers diesel versions and 4×4 traction, a segment that the new Chevrolet Montana does not cater to.

Prices, Versions, and the Cost of Owning Each

The 2025 Montana line starts at R$ 130.990. The Premier version, analyzed here, has a suggested price of R$ 159.990, positioned competitively against the Toro Freedom (R$ 165.990). The Toro Volcano already starts at R$ 182.990.

In terms of ownership costs, the Montana has the advantage. An analysis from November 2023 showed a depreciation of 13.3% for Chevrolet’s pickup after a year, while the Toro lost 15.7% in the same period.

Among owners, the most common complaints about the Montana are the impossibility of towing and rear visibility. In the Toro, the most cited negative points are the difficulty of maneuvering in tight spaces and the high fuel consumption of the flex versions.

What Is the Ideal Buyer Profile for Each Pickup?

The choice between the two models entirely depends on the buyer’s usage profile.

The new Chevrolet Montana is the ideal choice for the urban consumer seeking the versatility of a bed without sacrificing the comfort, technology, and efficiency of an SUV. It is a car for the family, for leisure, and for everyday use in the city.

The Fiat Toro is the more suitable option for those who actually need a stronger and more robust pickup. Whether to carry more weight, tackle dirt roads with 4×4 traction, or have the autonomy of a diesel engine, it offers a package more aligned with work and more demanding adventures.
