Largest Copper, Gold, and Silver Discovery in 30 Years in South America Promises to Redefine Mining Worldwide: Discover Where This Mega Deposit Is and How It Attracts Billions in Investments

Imagine a mineral reserve so vast that it could redefine the future of global mining. This is the promise of Lundin Mining, a Canadian giant that, in partnership with BHP, revealed the largest gold, silver, and copper discovery in the last 30 years. Located in the heart of the Vicuña district, between Chile and Argentina, the Vicuña Corp. project combines the Filo del Sol and Josemaria deposits, positioning itself as one of the world’s top ten copper complexes.

With impressive numbers and a billion-dollar investment potential, this discovery is shaking up the mineral sector. Want to know more? Keep reading!

Discovery of Copper, Gold, and Silver Reserves Consolidates the Region as a Landmark for Mining Worldwide

Lundin Mining, with operations in Brazil, Chile, Portugal, and the United States, announced that the Filo del Sol and Josemaria deposits host one of the largest concentrations of ore ever recorded. The estimates are breathtaking:  13 million tons (Mt) of copper in measured and indicated (M&I) resources, plus 25 Mt in inferred resources. For gold, the numbers reach 32 million ounces (Moz) in M&I and 49 Moz in inferred. Silver isn’t far behind, with 659 Moz in M&I and 808 Moz in inferred.

“This is the largest greenfield copper discovery in three decades,” stated Jack Lundin, president and CEO of Lundin Mining, in an official statement. He emphasized the high grade of the deposits, ensuring efficiency and financial returns in the early years of extraction. This revelation consolidates the region as a landmark in global mining.

Why Is This Discovery So Special?

What makes the Vicuña complex unique is its high-grade mineral composition. In Filo del Sol, there is a core with over 600 Mt of ore at 1.14% copper equivalent (CuEq). Josemaria, on the other hand, presents about 200 Mt at 0.73% CuEq. These numbers indicate that initial extraction will be highly profitable, especially due to the layer of copper oxide at the surface, which requires a lower initial investment.

Additionally, Lundin Mining has identified enormous expansion potential. Drilling in the Flamenco zone, south of Filo del Sol, revealed continuous mineralization at depth. “We are just beginning to understand the size of this treasure,” stated a geologist from the team in an interview with Reuters. This potential raises expectations for the future of the project.

Vicuña Project May Attract Billions in Investments, Transforming Local and Global Economies

The discovery has propelled Lundin Mining’s mineral resources into impressive numbers. There was a 29% increase in measured and indicated copper resources and a 650% jump in inferred resources. This data reinforces the company’s position as one of the global leaders in mining.

For industry analysts, like Maria Cortez from Bloomberg, “the Vicuña project may attract billions in investments, transforming local and global economies.” The joint venture with BHP, one of the largest mining companies in the world, further strengthens the credibility of the endeavor.

Cutting-Edge Mining

Filo del Sol will be an open-pit mine with two main pits (Filo and Tamberías), operating with a sterile/ore ratio of 1.57:1. Surface oxide zones, with 0.8% soluble Cu, will be processed by heap leaching, while the sulfide ore will undergo flotation, generating concentrates with recoveries of 89% (copper), 75% (gold), and 70% (silver). Josemaria, in turn, will adopt underground mining in descending panels to access high-grade zones (1.2% CuEq) at a depth of 400 meters. “Our approach combines efficiency and innovation,” assured Dicaire to Mining Weekly.

Lundin Mining plans to release an integrated technical report in the first quarter of 2026, detailing the development of the complex. “We are excited to move forward with our partner BHP and create lasting value for our stakeholders,” declared Jack Lundin. The document will be crucial in defining the next steps, including timelines and extraction strategies.

The strategic location on the border between Chile and Argentina also facilitates access to infrastructure and global markets. According to Mining, the Vicuña district could become a hub for sustainable mining, with modern technologies to minimize environmental impacts.

Impacts Go Beyond Minerals: Job Creation and Tax Revenues

The construction phase will employ 5,000 workers, with 2,800 permanent positions during operation. Studies by the San Juan Mining Association project fiscal contributions of US$ 120 million/year for Argentina and US$ 85 million/year for Chile, including royalties and corporate taxes. BHP has committed to allocating 1% of annual EBITDA to community programs in education and health.

Why Does This Matter to You?

This discovery could impact the global metals market, influencing prices for gold, silver, and copper. For investors, it is a golden opportunity – literally. For local communities, it represents jobs and economic development. And for the mining sector, it serves as a reminder of the untapped potential of South America.
