Initiatives, Studies, Events, and Courses Are Among the Strategies of Organizations to Expand Racial Representation in the Oil and Gas Industry.
The leading entities in the energy sector, Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP), Zumbi dos Palmares University, and the Business Initiative for Racial Equity, have established a strategic partnership for Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) actions in the oil and gas sector. They signed two agreements on Wednesday, June 28, aimed at attracting, training, and retaining young Black individuals in the Brazilian energy job market.
Increasing the Visibility of Black Professionals in the Oil and Gas Sector
The alliance between IBP and Zumbi dos Palmares University is consolidated through a cooperation agreement that primarily focuses on increasing the visibility of Black professionals in the oil and gas market. “With 56% of Brazil’s population being Black and mixed-race, it is our responsibility at IBP to highlight the lack of Black representation, especially in leadership positions,” said Fernanda Delgado, Executive Director of IBP.
On the other hand, the rector of Zumbi dos Palmares University, Professor Dr. José Vicente, emphasized that this collaboration fulfills an old desire of the Black community. He highlighted the potential of the oil industry to be a catalyst for racial equality, especially through the hiring of newly graduated young Black individuals.

Promoting Racial Equity: A Business Commitment
Additionally, IBP has signed an agreement with the Business Initiative for Racial Equity, committing to ten initiatives aimed at promoting racial equality. Tatiana Pio, General Coordinator of the Business Initiative, emphasized the importance of breaking barriers and seeking diversity at the highest levels of companies.
During the event, possible improvements were discussed. Fernanda Delgado from IBP stressed the need for diversity of thought, which includes mapping and training. In this sense, she advocates for the leadership of women, Black individuals, people with disabilities, LGBTQIAPN+, and all the new forms of thought necessary for the evolution of the job market.
“Our goal is to evolve. Soon, we will launch a voluntary self-identification form for Black professionals in the oil and gas sector. In addition, we plan to prepare young Black individuals through learning pathways for qualification in the energy sector, focusing on technology, financial management, management, and legal aspects,” announced the Executive Director of IBP.
