A New Law Is Under Review And May Eliminate The Requirement For The National Driver’s License (CNH) For Certain Categories Of People. This Change, If Approved, Will Benefit Specifically Groups That Meet Pre-Established Requirements, Allowing Them To Drive Vehicles Without The Need To Obtain The CNH

Driving Without CNH? A New Law May Consider The End Of The CNH Requirement For A Certain Brazilian Public. Saying Goodbye To CNH May Be Closer Than One Thinks For The Elderly, Given The New Renewal Rules For The National Driver’s License, Our Beloved CNH.

Drivers Aged 60 And Over Usually Go Through Different Criteria Than Younger Drivers, Something That May Complicate The Right Of The Elderly To Drive.

End Of Mandatory: Elders Could Say Goodbye To CNH? Understand The New Rules About Driving Without CNH

GOODBYE CNH: The Rules For CNH Renewal May Vary Depending On The Driver’s Age. For Elderly Individuals Over 60, The New Rules Will Ensure That The Elderly Driver Can Continue Driving Without Major Complications. However, It Is Essential For The Driver To Stay Attentive To The New Requirements For CNH Renewal.

The Rules Have Been Updated Not Only For Elderly Drivers But Also For Those Aged 18 And Above. Check Out The New Rules For CNH Renewal:

– Drivers Aged 18 To 49: CNH Renewal Must Be Done Every 10 Years;

– Drivers Aged 50 To 69: CNH Renewal Must Be Done Every 5 Years;

– Drivers Aged 70 And Over: CNH Must Be Renewed Every 3 Years.

CNH Renewal Process For Drivers Over 60

Drivers Over 60 Can Rest Assured, As The CNH Renewal Process Is Simple And Without Major Mysteries. However, Some Important Steps Need To Be Followed. Check It Out:

– The Driver Must Access The Website Of The State Department Of Transit (DETRAN) Of Their Home State;

– Log In To The DETRAN Website Using Their CPF Or CNPJ Number And National Driver’s License Registration Number (RENACH) Or Password – This Step May Vary By State;

– Check And Confirm Your Personal Data And Follow The Instructions On The DETRAN Website To Request The CNH;

In Some Cases, Medical And/or Toxicological Exams May Be Required, With Payment Of A Fee To Conduct The Required Exams. For Example, In The State Of São Paulo, The Medical And/or Toxicological Exam Scheduling Is Done Directly Through The DETRAN-SP Website, And The Fee Is Paid Directly At The Medical Office Where The Exams Will Be Conducted.

It Is Important To Emphasize That, Even If The Driver Is Over 60 Years Old, It Remains Prohibited To Drive Without A CNH, Subject To A Minor Fine.

– Driving Without CNH: R$ 88.38 (Minor Fine);

– Driving Without A CNH: R$ 880.41 (Severe Fine);

– Driving With A License From Another Category That Is Not Yours: R$ 586.94 (Severe Fine);

– Driving With An Expired CNH: R$ 293.47 (Severe Fine).

Learn More About The New Deadlines For CNH Renewal In 2024

The CNH Validity Period Update Was Made In 2021 To Adjust To New Demands. Until 2020, The CNH Renewal Period Was Up To 5 Years For Drivers Under 65 Years Old And 3 Years For Drivers Over 65 Years Old.

The Decision Came From The Federal Government At The Time, Which Also Made Several Other Changes To The Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), Aiming To Adapt The Rules To The Current Reality Of The Country. Thus, It Is Necessary To Stay Alert To The CNH Renewal Deadlines So As Not To Pay Fines And, In The Worst Case Scenario, Lose The Right To Drive. Remember The Deadlines:

  • For Drivers Aged Up To 49 Years: CNH Is Valid For 10 Years;
  • For Drivers Aged 50 To 69 Years: CNH Is Valid For 5 Years;
  • For Drivers Aged 70 And Over: CNH Is Valid For 3 Years.

Attention To Penalties

As The Renewal Period For CNH Of Elderly Individuals Over 60 Years Is Short, It Is Extremely Important That They Stay Attentive To The Validity Period To Avoid Suffering Any Consequences From Driving With An Expired CNH. Due To The Short Renewal Period, Elderly Drivers Must Be Aware Not Only Of The Deadline But Also Of The Consequences, Which Are:

Fine Of R$ 293.47, Considered Severe;

In Addition To Paying The Fine, 7 (Seven) Points Are Added To The Driver’s License.

It Is Also Worth Remembering That Drivers Can Drive For Up To 30 (Thirty) Consecutive Days After The CNH Expires. However, Despite The Good Tolerance Period, It Is Essential For The Driver To Renew Their CNH If They Want To Continue Driving Since After This One-Month Tolerance Period, It Is Prohibited To Drive Until The CNH Is Regularized At DETRAN.
