The Aegea Saneamento Biogas Energy Production Project Is the Company’s New Bet for Greater Security in Its Own Resource Supply, as Well as Utilizing the Potential for Energy Production from This Method.

The company Aegea Saneamento intends to invest in energy production from biogas for internal supply, with plans to carry out a project in this sector. Thus, by this Friday (06/24), it is believed that the company will be able to take advantage of the high potential for energy production that the waste generated in its operations possesses, ensuring much greater energy security in its supply, in addition to contributing to a cleaner source for the environment.

Aegea Saneamento Is Expanding Energy Purchases in the Free Market but Intends to Invest in a Project for Its Own Resource Production from Biogas

The company Aegea Saneamento is one of the largest sanitation companies in the national territory and holds a 49.5% share of the private basic sanitation market in Brazil, present in more than 49 cities.

Thus, the energy supply of the company is one of the main concerns at the present moment, and the company intends to carry out a project for its own resource production from the reuse of waste from its operations, transforming it into biogas for production.

The company has been investing in recent years in the purchase of clean energy in the free trade market in the national territory as a way to reduce the production costs of this resource, but now it intends to change its perspective on the Brazilian energy landscape.

With this project, the company seeks to achieve more competitive conditions for the operations of Águas do Rio, which took over two concession blocks from the auction of the State Water and Sewage Company of Rio de Janeiro (Cedae) in 2021.

Thus, the Aegea Energy Management and Energy Efficiency Manager, Emerson Rocha, commented on the biogas energy project and the company’s presence in the Brazilian free market and emphasized: “Today our entire free market is negotiated in bilateral contracts, in PPAs, but we are structuring large self-production projects that should soon come out of the oven to also meet our load in Rio de Janeiro. Today, we have more competitive sources like solar, but we have been studying this (biogas production) strongly as a potential energy recovery pathway.”

Investment in a Project for Own Biogas Production Will Ensure Cost Reduction for the Resource and New Perspectives for the Company’s Growth

The production potential of Aegea Saneamento regarding biogas is highly significant, as the company can utilize sludge generated from sewage treatment for energy production from this clean resource.

In addition, the reject can also be used as a basis for resource production in distributed generation, in units with lower consumption, where the company is still linked to the captive market, as a way to ensure more efficiency in production.

Moreover, Aegea Saneamento is now seeking to reduce its costs for the resource with its own energy production from biogas, as electricity expenditures represent between 28% and 30% of the company’s operational costs currently, a high amount for a company of this size.

Finally, the company highlighted that its energy consumption is expected to exceed 120 MW on average in the next ten years, provided that Aegea’s expansion continues at this pace.

Therefore, investing in a self-generation project for energy from the reuse of waste to be transformed into biogas is currently the most viable and profitable alternative for Aegea Saneamento to achieve its internal supply according to its current economic needs.
