AES Brazil and Unipar Close Deal and Plan to Invest Over Half a Million Reais in a Wind Power Complex with 91 MW Capacity in the Northeast Region of the Country

AES Brazil and Unipar Carbocloro have signed a new contract for self-production of renewable energy in a project that will receive investments exceeding half a million reais in wind energy generation in the Northeast region, according to the two companies. The partnership aims to install a park with a capacity of 91 MW in the Cajuína wind power complex, which is being developed by AES Brazil in Rio Grande do Norte.

Unipar Will Produce 80% of Its Electricity Consumption

AES Brazil and Unipar are jointly creating a joint venture focused on the wind energy project in the Northeast, which follows the self-production model. The contract establishes the commercialization of 40 MW average for a period of 20 years starting in 2024.

With the new agreement, Unipar will produce 80% of all the electricity it consumes. According to the company’s CEO, Maurício Russomano, the expectation is that the unit will be operational by the end of 2023.

Russomano, referring to the product generated without emitting polluting gases, states that the wind energy generated in the Northeast will be used in Unipar’s green hydrogen production.

Unipar Plans to Build Chlorine Production Factories in the Northeast

This is the third joint venture focused on clean energy generation announced by the company since it started its plan for the sector a year and a half ago. Since then, it has announced two projects, one for wind energy in Bahia, with AES Brazil, and another for solar energy, with Atlas Renewable Energy in Minas Gerais.

The announcement occurred during the company’s plans to advance in constructing two factories for the production of soda and chlorine in Northeast Brazil. For AES Brazil, the new project represents an advancement in the hiring of the Cajuína complex, as well as competitive differentials of energy compared to other generators, said Rogerio Jorge, Vice President of Customer Relations at the company.

According to Jorge, the company’s level of uncertainty regarding the investment is very low, due to the availability of machines. Currently, customers prefer more due diligence, request local community management plans, and do not merely acquire sustainable energy. The executive further states that Unipar is already its partner and monitors how AES Brazil manages environmental licensing.

In addition to this unprecedented solar robot, AES has also invested in Ecoppia’s solar robots to automate the cleaning of photovoltaic panels, in 5B, and its MAVERICK technology for plug and play solar farm installation, and in the world’s first solar storage and battery solutions coupled with DC, providing dispatchable power.

Learn About AES Brazil’s Projects in the Northeast

AES Brazil has been developing, in parallel, two wind energy complexes in the region. Cajuína, which has approximately 1.3 GW of installed capacity, with 473 MW of this already having contracts with large market consumers, such as Alcoa, Ferbasa, BRF, and Minasligas; and the Tucano project, situated in Bahia, which has 322 MW already contracted and an additional 260 MW available for sale. After the business announcement, the company updated its total investment estimates for the period 2021-2025 to approximately R$ 3.9 billion in a separate statement.
