The Airbus A320 Surpassed the Boeing 737 and Became the Best-Selling Airplane in History, Marking a Historic Turning Point in Global Aviation.

The Airbus A320 has just achieved a historic feat. On Tuesday (10/07/2025), the European model officially surpassed the Boeing 737 and became the best-selling airplane in history, according to data from the British consultancy Cirium.

The milestone occurred after the delivery of a new unit of the A320 to the Saudi Arabian airline Flynas, raising the total number of aircraft delivered to 12,260 since 1988.

This milestone solidifies Airbus as the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world in annual deliveries and ends a more than four-decade rivalry between the European company and American Boeing, which dominated the single-aisle jet market since the launch of the 737.

A Historic Turning Point in the Commercial Aviation Sector

The Airbus A320, launched 37 years ago, was created as a direct response to the success of the Boeing 737.

Over time, it became the preferred model for airlines worldwide, especially low-cost carriers known for prioritizing efficiency and operational cost savings.

The record that belonged to Boeing was quietly surpassed during the night with the delivery to Flynas. From that moment on, Airbus officially took the lead in the ranking of best-selling airplanes — a symbol of the shift in the balance of power between the two aviation giants.

Four Decades of Rivalry and Innovation

Since the late 1980s, Airbus and Boeing have been competing intensely for dominance of the skies.

The two manufacturers together have delivered more than 25,000 single-aisle jets — aircraft originally designed for routes between major airports but that have gained traction in airlines operating short-haul and low-cost flights.

The success of the A320, however, did not happen by chance. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Boeing reduced the production of the 737 amid the decline in global demand, while Airbus maintained its pace and seized the opportunity to capture new markets.

Airbus Consolidates Leadership and Redefines the Future of Aviation

The dominance of the Airbus A320 not only represents a commercial victory but also marks the consolidation of Airbus as the leading global manufacturer of commercial airplanes.

Currently, the company delivers more aircraft per year than any other competitor, a result of an expansion strategy that involved cooperation among France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom — founding countries of the European consortium.

This collaboration was essential to address logistical and strategic challenges in the early decades of operation, but over time it evolved into a model of global success.

Thus, the achievement of becoming the best-selling airplane in the world symbolizes not only the triumph of a model but also of a European industrial integration project that revolutionized aviation.

What the Airbus A320 Represents for the Future of the Industry

More than just numbers, the success of the Airbus A320 illustrates how innovation, efficiency, and adaptability to new market demands can redefine the trajectory of an entire industry.

The model was a pioneer in automation technologies and reduced fuel consumption, characteristics that have become standards in modern aircraft.

Meanwhile, the Boeing 737, although still widely used, faces challenges in terms of image and production, especially after the incidents involving the 737 MAX.

This situation opens the door for the A320 to continue expanding its global presence and influencing the future of commercial air transport.
