A heavy rain in Rio Claro, with a volume of nearly 40 millimeters, caused flooding in Rio Claro on Friday afternoon (2), mobilizing Civil Defense teams from Rio Claro, who needed to rescue two people trapped in a flooded car.

The incident occurred on the flooded Avenue 16, in the Jardim São Paulo neighborhood, an area known for recording floods in the interior of São Paulo.

Despite the inconveniences, no one was injured.

According to authorities, the force of the floodwaters surprised the occupants of the vehicle, who were unable to get out on their own due to the rapid accumulation of water on the road.

The teams conducted the rescue safely, reinforcing the role of Civil Defense in extreme weather occurrences.

Avenue 16 Flooded Is A Critical And Historic Flood Point

The flooded Avenue 16 is considered one of the most critical flood points in Rio Claro. The section is at a lower level compared to Avenida Castelo Branco, one of the main accesses to the Washington Luís Highway.

Because of this characteristic, rainwater drains into the area and ends up being dammed.

According to the Civil Defense of Rio Claro, the rescued couple is from Curitiba (PR) and was unaware of the flooding history of the region.

This factor contributed to the floodwaters surprising the vehicle, highlighting the risks that drivers face when navigating vulnerable areas during storms.

Other Flood Points Increase Inconveniences In The City

Furthermore, in addition to the flooded Avenue 16, the heavy rain in Rio Claro caused flooding in at least four other points in the municipality.

Among them is the viaduct on Avenue 29, which also showed significant water accumulation.

These reports reinforce a recurring scenario of floods in the interior of São Paulo, especially in cities that face limitations in their urban drainage system.

During periods of intense rain, the volume of water exceeds the drainage capacity, causing inconveniences to the population.

Civil Defense Of Rio Claro Maps Risk Areas And Keeps Alert

According to the coordinator of the Civil Defense of Rio Claro, Danilo, the municipality currently has 42 points mapped as prone to flooding.

These locations have structural drainage problems or cannot accommodate large volumes of water in short periods of time.

“The Civil Defense advises that people do not traverse flooded areas. Avoid routes that are known flood spots, seek a safe location, or wait for the rain to pass.

If the water is above 15 cm, there is a risk of losing balance and being swept away,” explained the coordinator.

Meanwhile, the city remains on alert for new storms, as forecasts indicate the possibility of more heavy rain episodes in Rio Claro in the coming days.

Health Risks Increase During Floods In The Interior Of São Paulo

Thus, in addition to the immediate danger of drowning or accidents, the floods in Rio Claro pose additional risks to public health.

Contact with floodwaters can cause diseases such as leptospirosis, transmitted by the urine of rodents present in contaminated water.

For this reason, authorities advise the population to avoid any contact with accumulated water, especially on public roads and residential areas affected by floods in the interior of São Paulo.

Furthermore, the Civil Defense of Rio Claro emphasizes that, upon witnessing people stranded or risky situations during floods in Rio Claro, the population should immediately call emergency services.
