Brazil impresses the world with record oil production figures in 2024! The giant FPSO Guanabara, FPSO Carioca and P-77 lead a surprising ranking, placing the country at the top of the global energy scene. Discover which 30 facilities are transforming the sector and driving the growth of Latin America's largest economy!
Oil production in Brazil continues at a rapid pace, with offshore installations guaranteeing impressive volumes for Petrobras and other oil companies in Brazil. Between January and August 2024, the ranking of the 30 largest installations in the country highlights three platforms in particular: the FPSO Carioca (MV30), the P-77 and the FPSO Sepetiba, which presented remarkable performances in terms of production of barrels of oil per day (bbl/d).
What makes these numbers even more surprising are the strategic partnerships between energy giants such as Petrobras, TotalEnergies, Shell and others. Check out this article to see the highlights of these facilities and how Brazil maintains its position as one of the largest oil producers in the world.
Oil Production Ranking Through August 2024: Data and Another Simplified Table Below
August Highlights: FPSO Carioca Tops the Ranking
In August 2024, the FPSO Carioca, operated by MODEC, took the top spot for the month with an impressive oil production of 160.720 barrels of oil per day (bbl/d), consolidating itself as one of the main facilities in the country. In the year to date, FPSO Carioca occupies the third position, with an average production of 149.375 bbl/d.

The shared deposit of Sepia, of which FPSO Carioca is a part, is operated by Petrobras under a complex international partnership agreement. The field operators include Petrobras (55,3%), TotalEnergys (16,91%), a PETRONAS (12,69%), a QatarEnergy (12,69%) and the Petrogal Brasil SA (2,41%). These partnerships are essential to maximize the exploration potential of the Sépia field, considered one of the most promising in the Brazilian pre-salt layer.
FPSO Carioca: Advanced Technology and Strategic Partnerships
The FPSO Carioca uses cutting-edge technology to extract oil from the depths of the pre-salt layer, and its strategic location in the Santos basin gives it access to one of the largest reserves in the country. The companies involved in the Sépia field bring expertise and resources that make the operation highly efficient. In addition, the FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) model allows the production, storage and offloading of oil directly at sea, an innovative and effective solution for offshore operations.
Petrobras P-77: Efficiency and Solid Results
Another star in this ranking is P-77 platform, operated by Petrobras, which occupies second place in the accumulated total for 2024, with an average production of 158.116 bbl/d. This platform is located in field of Buzios, one of the largest oil fields in the world, located in the Santos basin.
The P-77's performance is impressive, achieving an oil production efficiency of 93,56%. This number reflects the high degree of optimization and production management, something that Petrobras has been improving over the years. With a production potential of approximately 169.000 bbl/d, the P-77 still has the capacity to increase its numbers, consolidating itself as one of the main facilities in Brazil.
In the Búzios field, Petrobras has 88,99% of participation, while its partners include the CNOOC (7,34%) and the CNODC Brazil Oil and Gas Ltda. (3,67%). The capacity of the Búzios field, together with investments in extraction technology, makes it a key piece in Petrobras' growth strategy.
FPSO Sepetiba: Rapid Growth and Huge Potential
The third highlight of this ranking is the FPSO Sepetiba, operated by SBM Offshore. The FPSO went up five positions in the ranking, demonstrating rapid production growth and becoming one of the promises for the coming years. With a production of 50.778 bbl/d, the FPSO Sepetiba is positioned in the 20nd place in 2024, but presents great potential for expansion.
the field of Mere, where the FPSO Sepetiba is located, is operated by Petrobras in partnership with several major companies. Petrobras holds 38,6% of participation in the field, while the Shell and TotalEnergies have 19,3% each one. Other partners include CNODC Brazil Oil and Gas Ltda. (9,65%), a CNOOC International (9,65%) and the PPSA (3,5%).
With just four producing wells in operation, the FPSO Sepetiba still has room for growth in its oil production. Its maximum production potential is 180.000 bbl/d, which indicates that it should continue to climb the rankings in the coming months. The combination of high capacity and strategic partnerships makes FPSO Sepetiba one of the Petrobras' most promising projects and its partners.
The Complete Ranking of the 30 Largest Oil Production Facilities in Brazil
In addition to the highlights mentioned, the ranking of the 30 largest oil production facilities in Brazil includes other important platforms, such as the FPSO Guanabara (MV-31), which leads the year-to-date with a production of 162.783 bbl/d, Ea Petrobras 74 (P-74), which is also in the top 10 with 91.498 bbl/d.
The full list features platforms operated by giants such as modec, SBM Offshore e Petrobras, which dominate oil exploration and production in the country. Each of these facilities is crucial to keeping Brazil among the world's largest oil producers, ensuring not only the extraction of crude oil, but also technological innovation and job creation.
Future Prospects for Oil Production in Brazil
With the steady growth of oil production in Brazil, the country continues to invest in new technologies and partnerships to further optimize its operations. Platforms such as FPSO Carioca, P-77 and FPSO Sepetiba are clear examples of how Petrobras and its international partners are leading the exploration of the pre-salt layer, which continues to be one of the largest oil production frontiers in the world.
Furthermore, the focus on partnerships with companies such as TotalEnergies, Shell, PETRONAS and others demonstrates that Brazil is committed to maintaining its global relevance in the energy sector, making the most of its reserves.
Brazil at the Top of Global Oil Production
Data released by ANP for the period January to August 2024 reveal how much Brazil continues to expand its oil production capacity. Facilities such as the FPSO Carioca, P-77 e FPSO Sepetiba are examples of efficiency and growth potential, positioning the country among the largest global producers. As Brazil continues to invest in technology and strategic partnerships, we can expect these platforms to maintain their growth and continue to dominate oil production rankings in the coming years.
These results not only reinforce the importance of pre-salt in the Brazilian energy matrix, but also place Brazil as one of the main players in the global oil scenario.
