The Hilux Is a Global Success, but It Is Not Available in the U.S. Market. Discover the Reason Behind This Decision!
The Toyota Hilux is known for its durability and robustness in adverse terrains. However, despite its global success, the model is not sold in the United States. This is due to a combination of factors that we will explain.
Recognized worldwide for its robustness and durability, the Toyota Hilux is one of the best-selling pickups in various countries. However, since 1995, the model has not been sold in the United States, being replaced by the Toyota Tacoma.
The primary reason for this change was the increase in import costs, making the maintenance of the model in the North American market unfeasible.

Unlike the Hilux, the Tacoma was produced in the U.S., more specifically in Texas, until 2023, when its production was moved to Mexico.
In addition to costs, the country’s stringent emission standards also influenced Toyota’s decision. Adapting the Hilux to meet environmental regulations would be a greater challenge than designing a new model.
Nevertheless, the Hilux continues to win consumers around the world, being famous for its toughness and longevity.
Some units even exceed the mark of 1,000,000 km driven, while models subjected to severe conditions surpass 480,000 km without major mechanical issues. This is due to its reinforced steel structure and the simple yet efficient design of the engine.
The Durability of the Toyota Hilux
The Hilux’s almost indestructible reputation is not just a market perception. Various extreme tests have been conducted to evaluate its durability.
In one of the most well-known experiments, conducted by the British program Top Gear, a Hilux was subjected to extreme conditions, including flooding, explosions, and even a building being demolished on top of it. Even so, the pickup still managed to function.
Today, Toyota models maintain this tradition of reliability, being equipped with powerful and efficient turbo diesel engines.
While the Hilux is no longer available in the United States, the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Tundra continue to serve the American market, keeping the brand as a reference in durable pickups.
The Pickup Market in Brazil in 2024
If in the United States the Hilux has ceased to be sold, in Brazil the pickup segment continues to grow strongly.
In 2024, the market recorded a significant increase of 17.8% compared to the previous year, with 474,632 units registered. This volume represented 19.1% of all vehicles sold in the country, highlighting the growing demand for this type of vehicle.
In the mid-size pickup segment, the Toyota Hilux led significantly, recording 50,000 units sold. The Ford Ranger showed impressive growth of 56.5% compared to 2023, reaching 31,852 registrations and securing second place.
The Chevrolet S10, which occupied this position the previous year, fell to third place, with 27,389 units sold.
Other mid-size pickups also had varied performances:
- The Mitsubishi L200 sold 10,980 units, showing a decline of 13.16% compared to the previous year.
- The Nissan Frontier recorded a growth of 10.36%, with 9,257 units sold.
- The Volkswagen Amarok had a slight decrease of 8.17%, totaling 7,326 sales.
Among the newcomers, the Fiat Titano and the BYD Shark entered the market in 2024, while models like the JAC Hunter and JAC IEV-330P had a discreet participation.
