Aneel Approved The First Lithium Battery Energy Storage Project. The Initial Investment Will Be R$ 146 Million To Get The Transmission System Underway
The National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) approved this week the first large-scale lithium battery energy storage project in the national transmission system. The initiative is led by Isa Cteep, which will invest approximately R$ 146 million in a 30 MW energy storage system to be installed at the Registro substation (SP), which aims to supply the Southern São Paulo Coast.

Energy Storage Project Approved By Aneel Will Generate Approximately 400 MW
According to the company, the lithium batteries will be installed in an area of approximately 4 thousand m³, similar in size to about 30 containers and capable of meeting the maximum demand of the Southern Coast, which is at least 400 MW.
The technology will operate during peak consumption times as a reinforcement to the transmission system, generating additional energy for about two hours, totaling 60 MWh and preventing interruptions in supply due to high usage during this period.

For Rui Chammas, the CEO of the company, the project approved by Aneel is a historic milestone for the energy sector and will serve as a laboratory for innovation, generating debates on how to integrate energy storage in batteries, due to its high operational flexibility and immediate response capability, which is much needed in the transmission system.
Project Approved By Aneel Will Be Completed In November 2022
The forecast is that the energy storage project will be delivered in November of next year, with the mission of supplying the summer demand starting from 2022/2023. Moreover, the Allowed Annual Revenue, due to the construction of the project approved by Aneel, will be approximately R$ 27 million.
The battery storage system can be used in various ways, such as relieving congestion in the electrical system to ensure the overall operation of the transmission system, frequency and voltage control, and compensating for the variability of solar and wind energy sources, enabling greater integration into the National Interconnected System (SIN).
It is worth noting that the use of batteries in the national electric sector has been developed since 2016, when Aneel launched Public Call 021/2016, where 23 Research & Development projects involving storage technologies were selected.
Isa Cteep’s Project Seeks Sustainability In The Brazilian Transmission System
The company, alongside USP, has studied the feasibility of using this solution in the transmission system since 2018, before presenting the Registro substation project to the planning bodies of the transmission system and the regulator, being the first and only concrete case of this type of application.
The company’s project also aims for a lower environmental impact, as it will avoid the use of systems that rely on diesel generation. With the batteries, the emission of 1,194 tons of pollutants will be reduced with just two years of technology use, in addition to the construction of works in environmentally protected areas, such as the Serra do Mar State Park.
