Are You Buying a Used Toyota Corolla 2.0 (12th Generation)? See What the Main Problems Are According to Owners.

Although it is a reference in reliability, the Toyota Corolla 2.0 (12th Generation) has generated complaints among owners. Reports published on the site Reclame Aqui point to flaws that directly affect the experience of those who bet on the best-selling sedan.

Among the main problems, according to owners, are premature wear of the steering wheel, difficulties in the ignition system, and freezes in the multimedia center.

Complaints have emerged in different regions of Brazil, especially among consumers who purchased the vehicle between 2020 and 2023.

Although it does not compromise the brand’s good reputation, these cases show that even established models are not free from isolated failures.

Toyota Corolla 2.0: Reliability with Reservations

The Toyota Corolla built its reputation on mechanical robustness, a 2.0 flex aspirated engine with up to 177 hp, and a CVT transmission with ten simulated gears. These factors, combined with good resale value, explain why the model remains unbeatable in the segment.

However, as the reports reveal, the 12th generation of the Corolla 2.0 is not completely immune to manufacturing problems and the durability of some components.

Peeling Steering Wheel: The Most Common Complaint

One of the main problems of the Toyota Corolla 2.0, according to owners, is the steering wheel trim. Owners report that the material peels even on vehicles with low mileage and regular maintenance.

In Paranavaí (PR), for example, a consumer reported that the steering wheel of the 2021 Corolla Altis started to flake even after all revisions were carried out at an authorized dealership. The complaint was not responded to by Toyota, which increased the customer’s frustration.

“I am the owner of a Toyota Corolla Altis 2021 and I am facing a chronic problem with the steering wheel, which began to peel and flake, even with all the care in use and maintenance. I have always had maintenance and cleaning done at the Noma dealership in Maringá (PR), precisely to preserve the vehicle’s originality and avoid the use of unsuitable products. I even used the courtesy washing service from the dealership itself, which reinforces that the defect is not due to misuse. Still, Toyota refused free repair, claiming the end of the contractual warranty, ignoring the Consumer Defense Code (art. 26,3), which guarantees the right to repair hidden defects, such as this one that manifests itself after some time of use, but originates in manufacturing (sic),” reports the consumer from Paranavaí (PR), whose name was not disclosed.

Similar cases are repeated in other cities, raising doubts about the durability of the coating used in the 12th generation of the sedan.

Ignition Problems in the 2.0 Engine

Another point of interest among the reports is the difficulty in starting the engine. Some owners claim that the car takes a long time to start or simply does not work on the first try.

Lucas, a resident of São José da Lapa (MG), reported that he faced ignition failures after only 13,000 km. The car spent over ten days at the dealership until parts such as fuel injectors and high-pressure pump were replaced.

“I purchased a Toyota Corolla with the goal of having a reliable car, especially regarding the mechanics. To achieve this, I made a significant financial sacrifice, as it is not easy to acquire a car of this size. My intention was to avoid any problems, trusting in the brand and the model. However, after only 13,000 km, the car presented an ignition problem. The defect was diagnosed by the dealership Osaka Pampulha (MG) on 03/24/25. For 12 days, the car was at the dealership for the replacement of several parts, including fuel injectors and high-pressure pump, but unfortunately the problem persisted”.

In this case, Toyota resolved the problem under warranty and provided a loaner car. Still, the delay in diagnosis and repair was a source of dissatisfaction.

Multimedia Center Freezing

The technology embedded in the Corolla is also subject to criticism. Owners report constant failures in the multimedia center, which can freeze, display a black screen, and even fail in the rear camera.

These instabilities compromise important features such as GPS, connectivity, and sound. For many drivers, it is an inconvenience that is not expected in a vehicle of this category.

Other Reported Issues

In addition to the more frequent cases, there are also reports of failures in the CVT transmission, malfunctioning wireless charger, and water leaks in the sunroof.

These problems appear on a smaller scale, but reinforce the need for attention from the automaker.

What Do Consumers and Toyota Say?

In several reports, consumers highlight the trust they placed in the model, often acquiring the car with significant financial effort.

The expectation was to have a vehicle free of headaches, which did not always happen.

On the other hand, in some situations, Toyota has shown a good stance by offering repairs under warranty and even a loaner car.

However, when complaints go unanswered, the vehicle’s image inevitably suffers.

Is It Worth Buying the Toyota Corolla 2.0 (12th Generation)?

Despite the complaints, the Toyota Corolla 2.0 (12th Generation) remains one of the most desired sedans in the market, thanks to its performance, comfort, and the brand’s tradition of reliability.

However, it is important for consumers to be aware of the main problems, according to owners, especially regarding the steering wheel, ignition, and multimedia center.

Regular maintenance at authorized dealerships and documenting any faults is the best way to ensure repairs under warranty.

Thus, those looking to invest in the model should consider both the strengths and the criticisms from current owners. After all, even a top seller can present weaknesses that deserve to be discussed.
