“We are not talking about just one oil well; we are talking about opening up an entire region of Brazil for oil exploration. Obviously, the Strategic Environmental Assessment is a real possibility and is under analysis at this very moment,” said the president of Ibama, Rodrigo Agostinho.
Thus, the agency will carefully assess all studies and technical opinions presented by companies interested in oil exploration in the region, especially Petrobras.
Petrobras and Other Oil Companies’ Exploration Campaign in the Mouth of the Amazon May Have to Await New Ibama Discussions
The oil companies had already submitted studies and technical opinions to obtain the environmental license necessary for oil exploration in the Mouth of the Amazon.
However, the assessments were criticized by environmentalists, who questioned the quality and reliability of the studies presented.
Oil exploration in the Mouth of the Amazon region is considered a significant technical and environmental challenge due to the geological complexity of the area and the quantity of flora and fauna that may be affected by oil activity.
In this context, Ibama has the important responsibility of evaluating and granting environmental licenses in a careful and responsible manner, considering environmental safety and the protection of the region’s biodiversity.
The minister Marina Silva herself advocated for new studies regarding Petrobras’s and other companies’ activities in the area.
“[The exploration of the Mouth of the Amazon] is highly impactful, and we have instruments to deal with highly impactful projects, which is the instrument of integrated environmental assessment, of strategic environmental assessment,” she stated.
