General Blackout Hits Large Part Of Cuba After Disconnection Of The National Electric Grid At 12:41 PM, Leaving Millions Without Power From Camagüey To Pinar Del Río, Including Havana, While Authorities Try To Reestablish The System Amid The Energy Crisis Aggravated By The Reduction Of Oil Reserves And The Unexpected Paralysis Of The Antonio Guiteras Power Plant

A large-scale blackout hit Cuba on Wednesday, leaving millions of people without power after the disconnection of the national electric grid around 12:41 PM. The interruption occurred amid an energy crisis aggravated by the reduction of oil reserves.

Blackout Hits Large Part Of Cuba And Leaves Millions Without Power

The power failure extended from the province of Camagüey to Pinar del Río, including the entire metropolitan area of Havana. The information was released by the U.S. Embassy in Cuba, which described the episode as a total blackout of the national electric grid.

According to the statement, the disconnection occurred at 12:41 PM and caused a widespread interruption in power supply in various regions of the island. The event represents the latest in a series of power cuts affecting the country.

The embassy also warned that the national electric grid of Cuba is becoming increasingly unstable. According to the statement, prolonged power outages, whether scheduled or not, have become a daily occurrence in several areas of the country, including Havana.

Cuban Electric Grid Suffers Direct Impact On Essential Services

Power outages in Cuba affect various essential services in the daily lives of the population. Among the reported impacts are failures in water supply, public lighting, food refrigeration, and communications.

In light of the situation, the embassy advised residents to conserve fuel, water, food, and cell phone batteries. The notice also recommends preparation for significant and prolonged power interruptions.

According to local reports cited by the Associated Press, the complete restoration of electrical operations on the island could take at least three days. The estimate reflects the complexity of the process of recovering the national electric grid.

Paralysis Of The Antonio Guiteras Power Plant Triggered The Blackout In Cuba

The blackout was reportedly caused by an unexpected shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant. The facility is located approximately 100 kilometers east of Havana and is one of the main units of the country’s electric system.

Vicente de la O Levy, Cuba’s Minister of Energy and Mines, reported that officials are working on restoring the national electric grid. According to him, the process is occurring amid a situation that is considered complex.

According to the minister, at least one power plant remains operational during the recovery process. The Felton 1 unit continues to operate while efforts to restore the electric system are ongoing.

Energy Crisis In Cuba Intensifies With Sanctions And Fuel Shortages

Cuba has faced frequent blackouts for years due to old problems in electrical infrastructure and chronic fuel shortages. In recent years, episodes of widespread power interruptions have become recurrent.

The situation worsened after sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump, which contributed to the reduction of the island’s oil reserves. The energy crisis has started to have a more intense impact on the operation of the national electric grid.

According to Reuters, the fuel shortage and state energy rationing have led residents and businesses to seek alternatives to maintain power supply. Some traffic lights and establishments continue to operate thanks to generators or solar panels.

Cuban Government Maintains Position Amid Energy Pressures

The energy crisis also intensified in January after the interruption of oil exports from Venezuela. The change occurred following a military operation by the United States that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

With the interruption of Venezuelan oil shipments, Cuba’s main source of fuel was affected. The reduction in supply contributed to an increase in difficulties in operating the national electric system.

In January, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that the government does not intend to negotiate with Washington to establish a new energy agreement. The statement was made despite the cut in vital power supply to Havana.
