Aneel Held A Series Of Auctions That Sold 51 New Renewable Energy Projects For The Brazilian Market
This Thursday, the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) held the New Energy Auctions A-3/2021 and A-4/2021, the first of this model since the beginning of the pandemic. A total of 51 renewable energy projects were contracted for 4 billion reais. The leader in this sector, Ceará, was left out of the 984.7 MW of power contracted in the auctions. Despite the lack of projects, some experts say that the state remains in a prominent position.

Executive Secretary Of Energy Speaks Out
According To Adão Linhares, Executive Secretary Of Energy At The Infrastructure Secretariat Of Ceará (Seinfra), There Was Already A Portfolio With Over 50 GW Of Energy Ready To Go To Auction. Due To The Low Contracting Capacity Of The Distributors, The Winning Projects Were Those That Proposed Only The Expansion Of Existing Plants.
According To Linhares, Due To The Proximity Of Already Having Connections, It Is Cheaper Than Making A New Project. Thus, Those Who Made Use Of Pre-Existing Projects And With Closer Expansions Won. Because Of This, The Absence Of Renewable Energy Projects For Ceará Demonstrates That The Proposals Submitted Were For New Plants With A Larger Energy Generation Capacity.

Research indicates that Brazilians support clean energy and wish to advance in the energy transition, but reject paying more on their electricity bill, showing a direct conflict between cost and sustainability.
“Excess” Energy
The Executive Emphasizes That The Power Concentrated In Each Aneel Auction Was Low Due To Overcontracting Of The Distributors, That Is, There Is More Energy Contracted Than Demand In The Sector.
Thus, The Projects From Ceará Will Shine Again When The Distributors Make More Contracts. According To The Secretary, Despite The Country Being In A Crisis, The Concessions Are Overcontracted And There Is An Imbalance Between The Renewable Energy That Is Being Generated And The Contracts That Were Made. On Paper, The Contracts Provide For More Energy Than Necessary; However, In Practice, This Energy Was Not Generated.
The Projects From Each Aneel Renewable Energy Auction Will Have Contracts Lasting 20 To 30 Years And Should Begin Supplying Energy In January 2024 Or January 2025.
