Volkswagen Multinational Is Not At All Happy With The Electric Copy Of The Beetle Made Shamelessly By Great Wall Motors

The Chinese industry still has not abandoned some old habits, and the Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Motors seems to care little about Volkswagen, even after the German automaker and its lawyers previously stated that they were investigating a plagiarism by the electric car manufacturer ORA, part of the Great Wall Motors group, for having presented a clone of the Beetle at the Shanghai Auto Show. Initially named ORA Punk Cat and recently renamed Ballet Cat, the vehicle shamelessly has the same features as the iconic car from VW, and this story will make waves.

The proof that the Great Wall Motors Group challenges the German automaker is that the official launch in China of its ‘new’ electric vehicles, ORA Ballet and Punk Cat (the Chinese electric Beetle), is scheduled for March 30 of this year.

They Cloned The Beetle In China!

It is possible to see in the video above that ORA was inspired – to not say it shamelessly copied – the features of the Volkswagen Beetle in its new Ballet Cat. The curved hood design, rounded headlights, and the shape of the back, complete with oval taillights, reference the old bug.

The interior of the Ballet Cat also resembles the Beetle, as it is equipped with a three-spoke steering wheel and instruments and displays in a circular shape. Despite the retro feel, the interior offers a multimedia screen and a floating center console. The local price details have not yet been confirmed.

When the Ballet Cat – then called Punk Cat – was first shown, VW acknowledged it was investigating the matter “regarding any utility model or design rights violations of Volkswagen AG and reserved the right to take necessary legal action.” It is unclear whether the automaker will pursue any legal action.

Chinese Automaker Challenges Volkswagen And Clones The Iconic Kombi Right After Shamelessly Manufacturing An Electric Copy Of The Beetle!

As if cloning the Beetle wasn’t enough, another Chinese automaker, SongSang Motors, cloned the iconic Kombi. Will this make “waves”? The Chinese manufacturer launched a new model inspired by an already existing one. In this case, it is the SongSang Motors that presented the SS Summer, a van with retro design clearly based on the Volkswagen Kombi or Type 2, as can be seen below.

Cloning Is Not New For The Chinese

Last year, the Chinese brand Wey did not waste any time and ‘cloned’ the Ford Bronco, five days after the launch of the American brand’s SUV in 2020. Wey is also part of the Great Wall Motors group, the same responsible for creating the electric ‘Beetle.’

The Chinese brand Foton Big General also presented, last year, an identical copy of the Ford F-150 Raptor pickup. See below the ‘Chinese invention’.
