According to Ralf Brandstätter, the CEO of Volkswagen, to achieve the new electric car sales goals, the company will aim to launch at least one model annually.

To heat up the market, this year, Volkswagen will introduce three models abroad: ID.4 GTX with all-wheel drive, ID.5 (SUV coupe), ID.6 (large SUV for China). The production version of the ID.Buzz is expected to debut in 2022.

Brandstätter mentioned that a new electric compact will be launched in 2025. The new top-of-the-line “Artemis EV,” based on a more current platform, is scheduled for 2026.

Volkswagen Aims to Lead Electric Car Sales in the United States and China

Volkswagen intends to lead electric car sales in the United States and China. According to the executive, the German multinational will invest 16 billion euros over the next five years for the development of software and digital technologies, including autonomous driving systems.

“The key is digitalization. The car is now a software-driven product, like a connected device. Cars will become smarter and safer. Electrification is just the beginning; the real disruption is yet to come,” said Brandstätter.

Combustion Engine Cars Golf, Passat, and Tiguan Will Have New Generations

Despite the billion-dollar investment in electric car production, Brandstätter also added that internal combustion engine vehicles will continue to play an important role for Volkswagen, and some of the best-selling models, such as Golf, Tiguan, T-Roc, and Passat, will have new generations.

He also stated that these vehicles will be necessary for some time, “but they need to be even more efficient,” referring to plug-in hybrid technology (with batteries that can be recharged at outlets).
