Volkswagen Aims to Lead Electric Car Sales in the United States and China
Volkswagen intends to lead electric car sales in the United States and China. According to the executive, the German multinational will invest 16 billion euros over the next five years for the development of software and digital technologies, including autonomous driving systems.
“The key is digitalization. The car is now a software-driven product, like a connected device. Cars will become smarter and safer. Electrification is just the beginning; the real disruption is yet to come,” said Brandstätter.
Combustion Engine Cars Golf, Passat, and Tiguan Will Have New Generations
Despite the billion-dollar investment in electric car production, Brandstätter also added that internal combustion engine vehicles will continue to play an important role for Volkswagen, and some of the best-selling models, such as Golf, Tiguan, T-Roc, and Passat, will have new generations.
He also stated that these vehicles will be necessary for some time, “but they need to be even more efficient,” referring to plug-in hybrid technology (with batteries that can be recharged at outlets).
