The new aquarium AquaFoz, inaugurated in Foz do Iguaçu, in Paraná, started operations this week and is already stimulating local tourism by showcasing 3.3 million liters of water, about 10 thousand animals, three floors of visitation, and unprecedented scientific partnerships.
Installed in front of the Iguaçu National Park, just a few meters from the Falls, the space opens its doors as a center for research, conservation, and environmental education, reinforcing why the city invested R$ 140 million in the project.
The enterprise, owned by Grupo Cataratas, also responsible for AquaRio, arrives with the mission to increase international tourist flow, strengthen scientific tourism, and create conditions for studies on endangered species.

Thus, AquaFoz establishes itself as one of the largest animal visitation structures in South America.
AquaFoz in Foz do Iguaçu: One of the Largest Aquariums in South America
Located in a strategic spot—right at the entrance of the Iguaçu National Park—the aquarium occupies an area of 23 thousand square meters and was designed to unite experience, science, and environmental impact.
Its set of tanks reaches the impressive mark of 3.3 million liters of water, distributed among scenic environments that recreate rivers, flooded forests, and sections of the ocean.
In addition to attracting visitors, AquaFoz takes on the role of supporting scientific programs, acting as a new research hub in Paraná.
10 Thousand Animals and 300 Species: Diversity Marks the New Aquarium
AquaFoz brings together approximately 10 thousand animals, divided into 300 species of freshwater and saltwater.
Among the highlights are the Iguaçu Surubim, native to the Iguaçu River and at risk of extinction, as well as sharks, rays, Amazonian fish, and the dourado, the project’s mascot.
To enhance scientific engagement, the aquarium has formed partnerships with institutions such as Fiocruz, State University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG), Federal University of Latin American Integration (Unila), and State University of Western Paraná (Unioeste).
Thus, researchers gain access to suitable facilities for studies on Brazilian ecosystems.
Monumental Structure: Six-Meter Tanks and Three Visitation Floors
AquaFoz also stands out for its engineering.
The concrete structure is equivalent to a 20-story building, with tanks reaching up to six meters in height.
The main circuit totals 750 meters in length, guiding visitors on a complete journey that starts at the Iguaçu River, continues to the Paraná River, passes through the Flooded Forest, and concludes in the Ocean.
During the tour, visitors can observe species such as stone catfish, Iguaçu minnow, freshwater ray, nurse shark, seahorses, and reptiles, in addition to Amazonian fish that reinforce the diversity of Brazilian fauna.
