Learn How to Use Your Car Air Conditioning Efficiently and Discover Tricks That Help Save Gasoline Without Sacrificing Thermal Comfort.

On hotter days, the air conditioning in the car is essential for ensuring comfort at the wheel. However, its constant use can increase gasoline consumption by more than 20%, according to Cesvi Brasil, a vehicle experimentation center.

This increase occurs because the air conditioning compressor is directly powered by the engine, requiring more effort and, consequently, more fuel.

The good news is that there are simple and effective tricks that help keep the air fresh inside the vehicle without compromising consumption. See below how to use them to your advantage.

Ventilate Before Turning On the Air Conditioning

When entering the car under strong sunlight, the first action should be to open all the windows.

This initial ventilation helps eliminate the accumulated hot air, reducing the thermal load inside the vehicle.

By doing this, the air conditioning needs to work less to reach the ideal temperature, which reduces gasoline consumption.

Keep Windows Closed While Using the Air Conditioning

It seems obvious, but many people forget: using the air conditioning with the windows open is one of the most common and harmful mistakes.

When the system is on and the windows remain open, the cold air escapes easily and the compressor is forced to work harder.

Result? More fuel consumption and less efficiency of the equipment.

Attention to Recirculation Mode

Another valuable trick is to activate the recirculation function when turning on the air conditioning.

This mode blocks the entry of outside air and speeds up the cooling of the interior of the car.

On the other hand, avoid keeping it on for too long, as the buildup of carbon dioxide can cause discomfort and even drowsiness.

Set the Temperature for Ideal Balance

Keeping the air conditioning at the minimum can seem tempting, but it isn’t always necessary.

Once the desired temperature is reached, it’s worth adjusting it to an intermediate range.

Besides keeping the environment pleasant, this adjustment reduces the workload on the compressor and helps save gasoline.

Keeping Maintenance Up to Date Makes All the Difference

To ensure that the air conditioning in the car works properly, it is essential to keep up with preventive maintenance.

Dirty cabin filters, compromised door seals, and problems with window channels can affect system performance and increase consumption.

Therefore, follow the recommendations in the vehicle manual and carry out the indicated periodic inspections.

Economy and Comfort Can Go Hand in Hand

Using the car’s air conditioning thoughtfully is the way to combine thermal comfort and gasoline savings.

With small changes in habits and attention to details, it’s possible to drive more efficiently without giving up internal climate control.

Moreover, taking good care of the system ensures the longevity of its components and more peace of mind in daily life.
