Developed in Brazil, the Oto Speaks Portuguese, English, and German and Will Function as a Travel Companion Inside and Outside Volkswagen Cars.

The new assistant Oto will be launched this semester in the Volkswagen cars, according to information from Times Brasil (CNBC). Created from advancements in generative artificial intelligence, the system is designed to act as a true “digital co-pilot,” assisting drivers with vehicle information, navigation, and voice interaction.

The Oto was born from the idea of transforming the experience on board into something more human and closer to the daily lives of drivers.

It speaks three languages: Portuguese, English, and German and can be accessed not only inside the vehicle but also through the user’s mobile phone, expanding its utility in everyday life.

How Oto Was Created

According to Cristina Cestari, CIO of Volkswagen South America, the inspiration came in 2023, when the popularization of artificial intelligence paved the way for new applications in the automotive sector.

The proposal was to create an assistant that went beyond technical commands, acting as a travel companion.

The Oto was designed by Volkswagen’s design team in Brazil and inspired by the classic Kombi Corujinha, an icon of the brand.

The name originated from an internal selection process with more than 40 suggestions. “Oto” was chosen for being short, symmetrical, of German origin, and for referencing the inventor of the four-stroke engine, Nikolaus Otto.

Functions and Commands of the New Assistant

The differential of Oto lies in voice interaction. To activate it, just say “Hey, Oto”, and the system begins to respond.

It will provide information about the car, route guidance, reminders, and even basic support outside the vehicle through integration with the mobile phone.

According to Times Brasil (CNBC), the idea is for Oto to be a digital avatar accessible on multiple devices, bringing convenience and enhancing the connection between user and vehicle.

This strategy aligns Volkswagen with competitors who are already investing in embedded AI solutions.

The Impact on Volkswagen Cars

The launch of Oto reinforces the automaker’s global plan to transform Volkswagen cars into connected, interactive digital platforms.

The focus on personalization and user experience aims to meet an audience that values connectivity and ease in daily life.

In addition to strengthening the brand’s innovative image, the system could open up new revenue streams through digital services and applications.

Oto also marks Brazil’s prominence in the development of technological solutions within the Volkswagen group, as its conception and design were born in the country.

Is It Worth It for the Consumer?

For drivers, the arrival of Oto could represent greater safety and comfort. Voice commands reduce distractions, allowing functions to be performed without taking hands off the wheel.

The fact that the assistant is also available on the mobile phone increases its utility, accompanying the user in different contexts.

However, experts remind that success will depend on the constant updating of artificial intelligence, compatibility with different models, and the public’s willingness to integrate the resource into daily life.

Oto arrives as Volkswagen’s bet to make its vehicles smarter and more connected, elevating the driving experience to another level. Developed in Brazil and ready to act as a travel companion, it symbolizes the advancement of artificial intelligence in the automotive sector.

Do you believe that Volkswagen cars will gain competitiveness with the arrival of Oto? Or do you still see these voice assistants as somewhat impractical for daily use?
