The suspicion that a meteorite hit the roof of a house in Texas gained strength after a fireball crossed the sky of the Houston area, causing booms heard by residents and leaving property damage.

A possible meteorite hit a house on the outskirts of Houston on Saturday night, according to reports from residents, local authorities, and a subsequent confirmation from NASA about the passage of a fireball in the northern part of the city. The case drew attention after an object opened a hole in the roof of a residence in Spring, Texas.

Sherrie James, a resident of the area, told KHOU11 that she realized the seriousness of the situation after her grandson went to check the property. According to her, the boy found a hole in the roof, and upon seeing the stone, she immediately thought it could be a meteor.

The resident stated that she reported the incident to the local fire department. Initially, the agents considered the possibility that the object had fallen from an airplane, but later informed that they had already received reports about a meteor that crossed the north of Houston and exploded into several fragments.

NASA details trajectory and fragmentation

On Saturday, NASA confirmed the occurrence of a meteor in a post made on X. According to the agency, witnesses in Texas observed a bright fireball around 4:40 PM local time.

According to the data released, the meteor became visible at an altitude of 79 kilometers over Stagecoach, northwest of Houston. After that, it continued southeast at 56,323 km/h and fragmented at 46 kilometers above Bammel, west of Cypress Station.

NASA also reported that the object weighed about one ton and was approximately 90 centimeters in diameter. The fragmentation generated a pressure wave that caused booms heard by residents, while the Doppler weather radar detected meteorites between Willowbrook and Northgate Crossing.

Residents reported noise and flash in the sky

Witness reports reinforced the sequence described by the space agency. Residents said they heard sounds similar to thunder just at the moment the fireball was seen in the area.

Wendy Camardelle Heppner, who lives in Bridgeland, told KHOU11 that the sound resembled thunder, although the sky was clear. Meanwhile, Shylie Troquille, a resident of Dickinson, reported seeing a small fireball crossing the sky before disappearing quickly.

The testimonies coincide with the information that the explosion of the meteor caused a strong atmospheric disturbance. The episode, therefore, was perceived by residents in different parts of the Houston area.
