Atlas Agro Brazil Fertilizers Announced an Investment of R$ 5 Billion in the Construction of a New Factory That Promises to Generate Thousands of New Direct and Indirect Jobs in the Municipality of Uberaba (MG).
The Norwegian-origin company Atlas Agro Brazil Fertilizers will invest R$ 5 billion in a new nitrogen fertilizer factory in Uberaba, which promises to create more than two thousand job opportunities. According to the City Hall, the project will be installed on the old site of the ammonia plant project, donated by the state government of Minas Gerais to the Municipality. The Secretary of Economic Development, Tourism and Innovation, Rui Ramos, stated that operations are expected to begin in the first half of 2024.
Letter of Intent Was Signed on October 27
The area, located in the Industrial District III, covers 1,086,535.44 m². The company emphasizes that during the construction of the unit, 2,000 jobs are expected to be generated. In the operational phase, another 560 direct and indirect jobs will be created. According to data from the City Hall of Uberaba, the project is sustainable and features a high degree of technological innovation, given that the production of nitrogen fertilizers uses water, air, and renewable energy sources.
The letter of intent for the factory installation was signed on October 27. According to Ramos, this protocol was signed so that the company could be sure it could count on the land to carry out the investments.

India announces a plan of $3.06 billion to bring aviation to forgotten regions: 100 new airports, $1.07 billion in subsidies, and regional routes guaranteed for 10 years, from 2026 to 2036, away from the centers.
It is a large complex with new technology, and the projects and permits still need to be detailed. Subsequently, incentives will be processed at the City Hall, in addition to passing through the City Council.
Brazil Is a Power in Agriculture
According to Knut Karlsen, president of Atlas Agro Brazil Fertilizers, who was present at the signing of the letter of intent, Brazil is a power in agriculture; however, it is still dependent on fertilizer imports to maintain food production.
The president emphasizes that the company’s plant to be installed in Uberaba (MG) will contribute to the sector’s autonomy as it will allow for the production of nitrogen fertilizers. Rodrigo Santana, the company’s operational director, added that the factory in Uberaba will use green hydrogen, through water electrolysis, for the production of ammonia, which is the raw material for the production of fertilizers by Atlas Agro Brazil.
Thus, there is no need to use natural gas or coal in the process. As for the start of the installation works for the new factory in Minas Gerais, which will create thousands of jobs, Santana states that there is a commitment to make the project possible as quickly as possible, but did not specify a date.
Construction of the New Factory Will Happen by 2024
Santana states that the company still has some extensive studies to carry out, given that it is a large and complex unit, a significant investment requiring substantial engineering studies. Several months will be necessary, and it is unlikely that the new unit’s construction will begin next year.
According to the operational director, once the construction begins, the expectation is a timeframe of about three years to complete the unit, ruling out the risk of the company withdrawing from the venture in Uberaba (MG).
Although the company has not disclosed the schedule for the start of installation works in Uberaba, Mayor Elisa Araújo stated that the expectation is to see the construction of the factory begin before the end of her first term in 2024. The estimated investment for the construction of the unit, which will create numerous jobs, will be the largest in Uberaba (MG) since the installation of Fosfertil in the city.
