Macaé Gains New Status as “National Energy Hub” and Enters the Race to Install the Jaci and Tupã Plants, the Two Thermoelectric Power Plants That Will Use Gas Processed by Petrobras’ Cabiúnas Terminal
Next Tuesday (16), projects for the implementation of two new thermoelectric power plants in Macaé will be presented in a public hearing held by IBAMA at the Roberto Marinho Journalist Convention Center. Highlighting that the Marlin Azul Thermoelectric Plant is already under construction in the city under the management of Mitsubishi, Pátria Investimentos, and Shell (Click here to learn more about it).
The licensing of the Jaci and Tupã units, created by Global Participações em Energia (GPE), consolidates the National Capital of Oil as a national energy production hub, transforming the gas processed by Petrobras’ Cabiúnas Terminal into fuel for the new cycle of economic development already faced by the city.

“All indicators, analyses, and perspectives point out that natural gas will be the source of a new phase of prosperity for Macaé. We are following the progress of these projects and believe that the installation of these thermoelectric plants creates a potential for energy production in our city not seen in other cities in the country,” analyzes the Secretary of Economic Development and Environment of the Macaé City Hall, Gerson Martins.
According to Gerson Martins, within the next five years, Macaé should host nine thermoelectric plants that will produce energy using natural gas processed in Cabiúnas. Today, the city already has two, the UTE Mário Lago and EDF Norte Fluminense.
“We currently have the construction of the Marlim Azul thermoelectric plant through a consortium that has Shell as one of the investing companies. Two other units are already licensed, participating in auctions held by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). We will now follow the public hearing on these two new projects, and there is one more in the study phase,” points out the secretary.
Currently, Macaé already has concrete data revealing the emergence of a new virtuous cycle. This Wednesday (11), the “Urban Systems” study gained traction, analyzing socioeconomic data from the main cities in the country.
In the ranking presented by the study, Macaé rose four positions, currently occupying the 17th position nationally, and third place in the state, below only Niterói and Rio de Janeiro.
“The city is definitively entering a new positive phase that will stimulate all sectors of our economy through the strength of oil and gas. However, the great result of this new moment will still be the generation of new jobs, returning our population lost opportunities during the crisis period,” points out Gerson.
